WAYI (104.3 FM) is an American Christian contemporary radio station. The station is licensed to Charlestown, Indiana, serving the Louisville, Kentucky, radio market. The station is owned by WAY-FM Network History The station was owned by Radio One when it was rhythmic contemporary WBLO, and switched its format in 2005 to classic country music. In 2007, Radio One sold the station to the WAY-FM Network, a Christian broadcaster and took the call letters WAYI. The station used to be a simulcast of WESI, 105.1 FM, but up until 2010 it had simulcast with WRVI. On March 31, 2010, Radio Multi-Media, a group headed by Rene Moore (formerly of the 1980s singing duo Rene & Angela) began leasing the station, changing the format to urban contemporary and the call letters to WWPW. Charlestown, Indiana
Charlestown is a city located within Charlestown Township, in Clark County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,775 at the 2020 census. History Charlestown was established in 1808, named after one of its surveyors, Charles Beggs, upon , of which was designated for a town square. It was established one mile (1.6 km) northeast of Springville, and was responsible for Springville's demise. Milling was important to the town, as the first mill was built in the area, on Fourteen Mile Creek, in 1804. This mill would be abandoned when John Work built a mill by use of a tunnel in 1814. Today, that mill is part of the Tunnel Mill Scout Reservation. From 1811 to 1878 Charlestown was the county seat of Clark County, but as Jeffersonville had surpassed it economically, the county seat reverted to Jeffersonville in 1878. WGHL (105.1 FM) is a commercial radio station located in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, broadcasting to the Louisville, Kentucky area. The station's studios are located in downtown Louisville and the transmitter site is in Jefferson Memorial Forest on the southern edge of Louisville/Jefferson County proper. WGHL is owned by Alpha Media. History 105.1 FM signed on in 1992 as Hot AC-formatted WEHR. It flipped to Christian music as WXLN in June 1996. In February 2000, the station flipped to active rock as "LRS 105", WLRS. Those call letters were formerly found on 102.3 FM from 1964 until 1999. The calls feature Smiley disguising his voice and carrying on a conversation with the recipient of the call. Urban contemporary music, also known as urban music, hip hop, urban pop, or just simply urban, is a music radio format. The term was coined by New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker in the early to mid-1970s as a synonym for Black music. Urban contemporary radio stations feature a playlist made up entirely of Black genres such as R&B, pop-rap, quiet storm, urban adult contemporary, hip hop, Latin music such as Latin pop, Chicano R&B and Chicano rap, and Caribbean music such as reggae and soca.
