WGAW (1340 AM) is a radio station licensed to Gardner, Massachusetts. Established in 1946 as WHOB, the station is owned by Steven Wendell and carries a talk radio format. History The station signed on December 23, 1946, as WHOB. It debuted at 1490 kHz on the AM dial, and the call letters referred to one of the station's founders, District Attorney Owen A. Hoban. WHOB was originally owned by David M. Richman, a Connecticut businessman; studios were in the Colonial Hotel in Gardner. The station's format was a variety of local news, music, and sports. One of the early stars on WHOB was a local country (then called "hillbilly") music performer named Doc Snow (real name: Edgar Arsenault). He performed live with his band, the Bar X Cowboys, and later became one of the station's announcers. The station was sold to Emilien R. WAZN
WAZN (1470 AM) is an ethnic radio station in the Greater Boston market, licensed to Watertown. It is owned by Multicultural Broadcasting, and broadcasts Spanish Christian language radio format programming, simulcast from M.R.B.I.'s New York City station. History The station signed on in January 1958 as WSRO, operating out of Marlborough. At one time, WSRO was a music station. Additionally, at one time, the station was simulcast in Gardner on WGAW (1340). However, in 1996, the station filed for bankruptcy, and was sold separately from WGAW in October. The new ownership gradually shifted the station to more of a talk radio format the following year. WSRO was sold to Alex Langer in 1998. Ernie Anastos (born July 12, 1943) is a New York Emmy award winning television news anchor and talk show host on WABC (770 AM) with ''Positively Ernie'' focusing on uplifting stories and interviews.
