WEA Llanelli
The WEA Llanelli is a branch of Adult Learning Wales. History The formation of the WEA Llanell was first proposed in the months leading up to the First World War, when a meeting was held on the 20th June, 1914 at the old Town Hall in Hall Street. By March 1915, lectures and classes were established jointly with the Aberystwyth Joint Committee for University Tutorial Classes. Lectures The WEA Llanelli holds a series of lectures during the academic year running from September to April. These include memorial lectures dedicated to a local politician Lord Elwyn Jones and Burry Port born diplomat Sir John Gray. Adult Learning Wales
Adult Learning Wales () is a registered charity and adult education provider serving the whole of Wales. History The present body was formed on the merger of Workers' Educational Association WEA Cymru and YMCA Community College on 1 August 2015, and adopted the present name in November 2016. WEA Cymru was itself a product of a recent merger, when on 10 January 2014 WEA South Wales joined with Coleg Harlech WEA (North). WEA (South Wales) The Workers' Educational Association WEA in South Wales traces its roots to a conference at Cory Hall in Cardiff in October 1906 initiated by Albert Mansbridge, with representatives of local authorities, trade unions and the university college. Twelve branches were formed between 1907 and 1914, bringing adult education to working people primarily in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor (17 January 1863 – 26 March 1945) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922. Ted Rowlands, Baron Rowlands
Edward Rowlands, Baron Rowlands (born 23 January 1940) is a Welsh politician, who served as a Labour Party Member of Parliament for over thirty years, including a period as a junior minister in the 1960s and 1970s. Education He attended Rhondda Grammar School and Wirral Grammar School, and then King's College London, where he obtained a BA in History in 1962. Political career Rowlands was first elected to the Commons at the 1966 general election as Member of Parliament for Cardiff North, but lost his seat at the 1970 election. He was elected to represent Merthyr Tydfil at the 1972 by-election called after the death of the long-standing MP S. O. Davies. Nia Griffith
Dame Nia Rhiannon Griffith (born 4 December 1956) is a Welsh politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Llanelli since 2005. A member of the Labour Party, she has served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities since 2024. Early life and career Griffith was born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, on 4 December 1956. She was educated at Newland High School for Girls (now called Newland School for Girls) in Hull and Somerville College, Oxford where she graduated with a first class degree in modern languages in 1979. Griffith was a founder member of a local Women's Aid organisation and is a member of the National Union of Teachers and the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers. Trevor Fishlock
Trevor Fishlock (born 21 February 1941) is a British reporter, author and broadcaster. He has worked as a foreign correspondent for The Times and The Daily Telegraph, reporting from more than 70 countries, and has written and broadcast programmes for television and radio. He has published several books with major publishing houses, including several on Wales. Fishlock was born in Hereford, and lives in Cardiff. He has broadcast from the National Library of Wales and gave the Machynlleth Festival's Hallstatt Lecture in 1999. Foreign correspondent Fishlock worked as a foreign correspondent for The Times in numerous countries for 17 years, reporting from more than 60 countries including Wales (1969–77), India (1980–83) and the USA (1983–86), later becoming Moscow correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, and writing a travel column. Margaret Davies
Margaret Sidney Davies (14 December 1884 – 13 March 1963), was a Welsh art collector and patron of the arts. With her sister Gwendoline Davies, Gwendoline, she bequeathed a total of 260 works, particularly strong in Impressionist and 20th-century art, which formed the basis of the present-day National Museum Wales' international collection. The sisters started the Gregynog Press in 1922 and the Gregynog Music Festival in 1933. Michael Llewellyn-Smith
Sir Michael John Llewellyn-Smith (born 25 April 1939) is a retired British diplomat and academic. He served as Ambassador to Poland from 1991 to 1996 and Ambassador to Greece from 1996 to 1999. He is visiting professor at the Centre for Hellenic Studies, King's College London. Early life Llewellyn-Smith was born in 1939. John Gray (diplomat)
Sir John Walton David Gray (1 October 1936 – 1 September 2003) was a senior British diplomat. In 1987, as the British ambassador to Beirut, Gray unsuccessfully attempted to dissuade Terry Waite from re-entering Beirut without proper protection, with the result that Waite was kidnapped and held for nearly five years. Early life John Gray was born in Burry Port in Carmarthenshire and educated at Blundell's School. After National Service in Cyprus and Egypt he attended Christ's College, Cambridge and later did postgraduate research in Arab nationalism at the Middle East Centre in Oxford and the American University in Cairo. Leslie John Griffiths, Baron Griffiths of Burry Port FLSW (born 15 February 1942) is a British Methodist minister, politician and life peer who served as President of the Methodist Conference from 1994 to 1995. Burry Port
Burry Port () is a port town and community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, on the River Loughor, Loughor estuary (Moryd Llwchwr), to the west of Llanelli and south-east of Kidwelly. Its population was recorded at 5,680 in the 2001 census and 6,156 in the 2011 census, and estimated at 5,998 in 2019. The town has a harbour. It is also where Amelia Earhart landed as the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby are the Pembrey Burrows sand dune and wetland system, forming a country park, and the Cefn Sidan sands. Its musical heritage includes Burry Port Opera, Male Choir and Burry Port Town Band. Elwyn Jones, Baron Elwyn-Jones
Frederick Elwyn Elwyn-Jones, Baron Elwyn-Jones, (24 October 1909 – 4 December 1989), commonly known as Elwyn Jones, was a Welsh barrister and Labour politician. Background and education Elwyn Jones was born in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and read history for a year at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and then at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He spent time in Germany in the 1930s. An acting bombardier in the Royal Artillery ( Territorial Army), he was commissioned as a second lieutenant on 23 December 1939.
