Nia Griffith
Dame Nia Rhiannon Griffith (born 4 December 1956) is a Welsh politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Llanelli since 2005. A member of the Labour Party, she has served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities since 2024. Early life and career Griffith was born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, on 4 December 1956. She was educated at Newland High School for Girls (now called Newland School for Girls) in Hull and Somerville College, Oxford where she graduated with a first class degree in modern languages in 1979. Griffith was a founder member of a local Women's Aid organisation and is a member of the National Union of Teachers and the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers. All-women Shortlist
All-women shortlists (AWS) is an affirmative action practice intended to increase the proportion of female Members of Parliament (MPs) in the United Kingdom, allowing only women to stand in particular constituencies for a particular political party. Labour abandoned the shortlist for general election purposes in March 2022. The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) is a trade union in the United Kingdom, consisting of over 360,000 members. Women's Aid Federation of England, commonly called Women's Aid within England, is one of a group of charities across the United Kingdom. There are four main Women's Aid Federations, 3 for each of the countries of the United Kingdom, and one for the Republic of Ireland (not being part of the UK). Newland School For Girls
Newland School For Girls is a secondary school for girls aged 11– 16, situated in the Newland, Kingston upon Hull, Newland area of Kingston upon Hull, England. History Newland School was founded in 1907 to meet the growing demand for girls' education. It opened on the site of the former Central Secondary School in Brunswick Avenue. A new building was constructed for the school on Cottingham Road but was initially used as a First World War military hospital. In 1920 the school moved to its new site in Cottingham Road and was renamed Newland High School. There were 480 girls on the roll in 1911, 598 in 1936 and 680 in 1963. In 2005 Hull City Council proposed closing and consolidating Newland School with Hull Trinity House School, but after outcries from both schools the plan was shelved and modernisation of the facilities was begun.
