History The station sign-on, signed on in September 1947, and held the call sign WTNC. It originally ran 1,000 watts, during daytimer, daytime hours only. Buddy Poole and other partners bought WTNC and its WIST-FM, FM station in 1984, and Poole served as general manager for 18 years. WIST-FM (98.3 MHz) is a Regional Mexican outlet serving the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. The Norsan Broadcasting station is licensed to Thomasville, North Carolina. The studios and transmitter are co-located in High Point, North Carolina. History The station started in Thomasville, North Carolina as WTNC-FM. During its history, its call letters have included WEYE. At one point, the station played country music during the day and urban contemporary music at night. During the 80s, 98.3, with the call sign WTHP, was one of the first oldies stations in the area. Buddy Poole, one of several partners who bought the station along with WTNC in 1984, was general manager from 1984 until 2002, when he bought WSAT in Salisbury. On May 5, 1989, the station lost its tower when severe storms struck the area. In the mid-90s, under the calls WFAZ, 98.3 played contemporary Christian music. Thomasville is a city in Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 27,183 at the 2020 census. The city was once notable for its furniture industry, as were its neighbors High Point, North Carolina, High Point and Lexington, North Carolina, Lexington. Adult standards (also sometimes known as the nostalgia or Big Band format) is a North American radio format heard primarily on AM or class A FM stations. Adult standards started in the 1950s and is aimed at "mature" adults, meaning mainly those people over 50 years of age, but it is mostly targeted for senior citizens. It is primarily on AM because market research reveals that only persons in that age group listen to music on AM in sizable numbers. Adult standards first became a popular format in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a way to reach mature adults who came of age before the rock era but were perhaps too mature for adult contemporary radio or too young for beautiful music or MOR stations.
