Victory (1996 Film)
''Victory'' is a 1996 French-German drama suspense film written and directed by Mark Peploe and starring Willem Dafoe, Irène Jacob, Sam Neill and Rufus Sewell. It is based on the 1915 novel of the same name by Joseph Conrad. The novel had been adapted into film on multiple previous occasions, including a 1919 silent version directed by Maurice Tourneur and featuring Jack Holt, Seena Owen, Lon Chaney Sr., and Wallace Beery; the 1930 William Wellman directed '' Dangerous Paradise'' starring Nancy Carroll, Richard Arlen and Warner Oland; and the 1940 version featuring Fredric March, Betty Field, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Mark Peploe
Mark Peploe (3 March 1943 – 18 June 2025) was an English screenwriter and film director. He was the brother of Clare Peploe, and the brother-in-law of director Bernardo Bertolucci. Mark Peploe's paternal grandfather was the renowned Scottish painter Samuel John Peploe (S. J. Peploe), and his maternal great-great-grandfather was the German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand. His mother, Clotilde Peploe, was a noted painter, and his father, Willy Peploe, worked as an art dealer. Mark Peploe's partner was art historian Alina Payne. Prior to that, he was married to costume designer Louise Stjernsward, with whom he had a daughter, Lola. Nancy Carroll (born Ann Veronica Lahiff; November 19, 1903 – August 6, 1965) was an American actress. She started her career in Broadway musicals and then became an actress in sound films and was in many films from 1927 to 1938. She was then in television roles from 1950 to 1963. Wallace Fitzgerald Beery (April 1, 1885 – April 15, 1949) was an American film and stage actor. He is best known for his portrayal of Bill in '' Min and Bill'' (1930) opposite Marie Dressler, as General Director Preysing in '' Grand Hotel'' (1932), as the pirate Long John Silver in '' Treasure Island'' (1934), as Pancho Villa in '' Viva Villa!'' Seena Owen (born Signe Auen; November 14, 1894 – August 15, 1966) was an American silent film actress and screenwriter. Early life Born Signe Auen in Spokane, Washington, she was the youngest of three children raised by Jens Christensen and Karen (née Sorensen) Auen. Her father and mother came from Denmark in the late 1880s and settled in Minnesota where they married in 1888. Charles John Holt, Jr. (May 31, 1888 – January 18, 1951) was an American motion picture actor who was prominent in both silent and sound movies, particularly Westerns. Early life Holt was born in 1888 in the Fordham section of The Bronx, New York, the son of an Episcopal priest at St. James Church. When in Manhattan, he attended Trinity School. He was accepted into the Virginia Military Institute in 1909, but expelled for misbehavior in his second semester there. Maurice Félix Thomas (; 2 February 1876 – 4 August 1961), known as Maurice Tourneur (), was a French film director and screenwriter. Life Born Maurice Félix Thomas in the Épinettes district (17th arrondissement of Paris), his father was a wholesaler. As a young man, Maurice Thomas first trained as a graphic designer and a magazine illustrator but was soon drawn to the theater. In 1904, he married the actress Fernande Petit. ''Victory'' is a surviving 1919 American action film directed by Maurice Tourneur and starring Jack Holt, Seena Owen, Lon Chaney, Wallace Beery and Bull Montana. The film is an adaptation of the 1915 homonymous novel by Joseph Conrad (the only film adaptation of one of his works that he ever lived to see). The screenplay was written by Jules Furthman and Ben Carré was the art director. The film was chosen by the New York Times as one of the top ten films of 1919. It was later remade in 1930 as ''Dangerous Paradise'', and again in 1940 as ''Victory''. The film still exists in its complete form in the Library of Congress and is available on DVD.
