Verrallia Aucta
''Verrallia aucta'' is a species of fly in the family Pipunculidae. It is found in the Palearctic.Coe, R.L. (1966) Pipunculidae.''Handbook for the Identification of British Insects'', Vol. X (Part 2c): 1-83; Royal Entomological Society Londonpdf/ref> Hosts Parasitoid on ''Philaenus spumarius''. Because ''P. s.'' is the most common vector (in Europe) of the invasive agricultural disease ''Xylella fastidiosa'', ''V. aucta'' is of great interest as a biological control. Insecticide application can produce paradoxical target rebound by hitting ''V. aucta'' as well as the intended ''P. spumarius''. This is also a problem for tillage, but only specifically in April, due to the particularities of the ''V. aucta'' lifecycle. Although not terribly common anywhere, across all of Northern Italy it was most common in the Piedmont. Pipunculidae
Pipunculidae is a family of flies (Diptera) commonly termed big-headed flies, a reference to the large (holoptic) eyes, which cover nearly the entire head. The family is found worldwide and more than 1300 species have been described. The larvae of Pipunculidae develop as parasitoids almost exclusively in Auchenorrhyncha, the exception being the genus '' Nephrocerus'', whose hosts are adult Tipulidae (crane flies). The larvae develop rapidly within the crane flies before pupating in the soil. In all pipunculids there are only two larval stages. Some species are used as biological control agents in rice fields. Taxonomy Taxonomy as shown at the Tree of life, with modification based on Kehlmaier, Dierick and Skevington (2014). The name Pipunculidae is derived from the type genus '' Pipunculus'' which is thought to be derived from Latin ''pepo'' for pumpkin, thus pipunculus would mean "little pumpkin", referring to the large heads. Subfamily Chalarinae * Genus '' Chalarus'' Wa ...

Josef Mik
Josef Mik, also Joseph Mik (23 March 1839 in Zábřeh – 13 October 1900 in Vienna) was a Bohemian entomologist mainly interested in Diptera. He described many new species and made contributions to knowledge of the Diptera of Central Europe. Mik was the first dipterist to clarify the chaetotaxy of the legs. " On the legs I distinguish a front haeta and a hind-side ; an upper- and an under-side. When we imagine the leg stretched out horizontally and perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the body, the front-side is that which is turned towards the head, and the hind-sidethat turned towards the end of the body ; the upper- and under-side, in such a case, are self-understood."Mik, J. 1878 Dipterologische Untersuchungen Jahresber K.K. Akad. Gymnasium Vienna Mik was born in Zábřeh, Moravia. From 1871 to 1889 he was teacher at the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna. In 1889 he was given the Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph; he died in Vienna. Works * 1866 Beitrag zur ...

James Edward Collin
James Edward Collin (16 March 1876, Kirtling – 16 September 1968) was an English entomologist who specialised in Diptera. He was the author of ''Empididae''. ''British Flies'', Volume 6. University Press, Cambridge (1961). This was the third volume in an uncompleted series begun by his uncle George Henry Verrall. Collin wrote extensively on Diptera of most families of Diptera (excepting those in Nematocera The Nematocera (the name means "thread-horns") are a suborder of elongated fly, flies with thin, segmented antenna (biology), antennae and mostly aquatic larvae. This group is paraphyletic and contains all flies but species from suborder Brachyce ...). The specimens collected by Collin and his uncle Verrall are in the Hope Entomological Collections at the University of Oxford. The OUM website provides a searchable database of the new species they described. He was a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society and its president 1927–1928. References *Chvála, M. 197 ...

Flies
Flies are insects of the Order (biology), order Diptera, the name being derived from the Ancient Greek, Greek δι- ''di-'' "two", and πτερόν ''pteron'' "wing". Insects of this order use only a single pair of wings to fly, the hindwings having evolved into advanced mechanosensory organs known as halteres, which act as high-speed sensors of rotational movement and allow dipterans to perform advanced aerobatics. Diptera is a large order containing an estimated 1,000,000 species including horse-fly, horse-flies, crane fly, crane flies, hoverfly, hoverflies and others, although only about 125,000 species have Species description, been described. Flies have a mobile head, with a pair of large compound eyes, and mouthparts designed for piercing and sucking (mosquitoes, black flies and robber flies), or for lapping and sucking in the other groups. Their wing arrangement gives them great maneuverability in flight, and claws and pads on their feet enable them to cling to smooth ...
