Vaulx-en-Velin
Vaulx-en-Velin () is a commune in the Metropolis of Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, eastern France. It is the third-largest suburb of the city of Lyon, and is located to its northeast, on the river Rhône. History The rivers, including the Rhône, regularly overflowed their banks, leaving behind a swampy area. The first verifiable mention of the village of Vaulx-en-Velin comes from the year 1225. The place was not spared from wars either. In 1628 the plague raged in the village. Many people suffered from malaria - the field name "En Palud" testifies to this. A dike was built between 1863 and 1879 to dry out around 9,000 hectares of land. The Saint Jean Villeurbanne dam, built between 1879 and 1882, protects Vaulx-en-Velin from flooding. Vaulx-en-Velin Fire
On 16 December 2022, a fire ravaged a residential building at 12 chemin des Barques in Vaulx-en-Velin, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France. It resulted in killing 10 people, including five children, and injured 14. Fire The fire broke out at around 3:00 a.m. on the first floor of a 7-story apartment building located at 12 chemin des Barques in the district of Mas-du-Taureau in Vaulx-en-Velin. The alert was given at 3:12 a.m. and the first members of the departmental-metropolitan fire and rescue service (SDMIS) arrive on the scene at three minutes later. A total of 170 firefighters and 65 fire engines were mobilized to put out the flames. Smoke reportedly caused many to become disoriented and unable to locate evacuation routes, forcing many to evacuate by ladders and exterior windows. Hôtel De Ville, Vaulx-en-Velin
The (, ''City Hall'') is a municipal building in Vaulx-en-Velin, Metropolis of Lyon, eastern France, standing on Place de la Nation. History Following the French Revolution, the town council initially met in the house of the mayor at the time. However, this changed in 1839, when the council decided to acquire a dedicated municipal building. The building they selected was the Château de Vaulx which was owned by the Chaumais family. The château was a fortified building, originally featuring four towers, which dated from the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the Renaissance style during the ownership of Etienne de Mucio, ''maître d'hôtel'' to Henry III, in 1580. The building became the home of Antoine-Etienne, Marquis de Rachais, who served as a lieutenant in the French Guards Regiment in the mid-18th century. Tramways In Lyon
The Lyon tramway () comprises eight lines, seven lines operated by TCL and one by Rhônexpress, in the city of Lyon, France. The original tramway network in Lyon was developed in 1879; the modern network started operation in 2001. Rhônexpress
Rhônexpress () is an express tram-train service which links Lyon, France, with its main airport, Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport, and the TGV railway station located there. At its opening in 2010, it became one of the most expensive airport-to-city lines in Europe per kilometre. The route is long, and served by six tram-train sets, built by Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail. The route from the airport to the city's business center at Part-Dieu Villette ( Lyon-Part-Dieu railway station) by way of Vaulx-en-Velin – La Soie (for transfer to Metro Line A) and Meyzieu takes roughly half an hour. Lyon Metro
The Lyon Metro (, ) is a rapid transit system serving Lyon Metropolis, France. First opened in 1974, it currently consists of four lines, serving 42 stations and comprising of route. Part of the Transports en Commun Lyonnais (TCL) system of public transport, it is supported by two funiculars and a tramway network. Unlike other French metro systems, but like RER and other SNCF services, Lyon Metro trains run on the left. This is the result of an unrealised project to run the metro into the suburbs on existing railway lines. The loading gauge for all lines is , more generous than the average for metros in Europe. Social Situation In The French Suburbs
