Varsity Netball
Varsity Netball is a netball league featuring teams representing universities in South Africa. It was formed in 2013. UFS Kovsies were the inaugural winners and they remain the league's most successful team, having won five titles. It is one of several similar sports competitions that form the Varsity Sports series. Others include leagues for men's football, women's football, field hockey, men's rugby union, and women's rugby union. History UFS Kovsies In 2013, UFS Kovsies won the inaugural tournament. With a team captained by Maryka Holtzhausen, they defeated NWU-Pukke 44–40 in the final. They won further titles in 2014, 2018, and 2021. In 2024, UFS Kovsies won their fifth title, after defeating UJ Netball 58–55 in the final. UFS Kovsies are closely associated with Free State Crinums of the Telkom Netball League. Lefébre Rademan
Lefébre Rademan (born 22 August 1996) is a South African netball player, who has represented the national team. At club level, she plays for Severn Stars in the British Netball Superleague (NSL), and has previously played for Celtic Dragons and London Pulse in the NSL, as well as Free State Crinums in the South African Netball League. Personal life Rademan is from Riversdale, Western Cape, South Africa. She attended Langenhoven High School, and later studied education at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. Club career Rademan started her career as a defender, but now plays as either a goal attack or a wing attack. Whilst at the University of the Free State, Rademan played Varsity netball for their team, the Kovsies. She later captained the side. She was part of the 2018 Kovsies team that won the Varsity Cup, and in 2019, she was named the season's best player and player's player of the year. Varsity Sports (South Africa)
Varsity Sports SA, is a group university sports leagues in South Africa. Its members all belong to the University Sport Company, and may each enter only one campus per competition, though they may enter different campuses for different competitions. History The Varsity Cup tournament was founded in 2008, featuring the rugby teams of eight universities. Varsity Sports was created as an offshoot in 2012. In the first season rugby sevens and beach volleyball were played. In 2013, athletics, field hockey, association football and netball were added. In 2016, mountain biking was added. Member universities Sports Varsity Sports currently runs competitions in six sporting codes. These are athletics, beach volleyball, association football, field hockey, netball and rugby sevens. Free State Crinums are a South African netball team based in Bloemfontein. Since 2014, they have represented the Free State in the Telkom Netball League. They were the inaugural league champions. Between 2014 and 2016, Crinums won three successive titles. In 2024, they won a fourth title. Gauteng Jaguars are a netball in South Africa, South African netball team based at the University of Pretoria. Since 2014 in South Africa, 2014, together with Gauteng Golden Fireballs, they have represented Gauteng in the Telkom Netball League. They are the league's most successful team and, as of 2024, have featured in every final. Between 2017 and 2021, Jaguars won five successive titles. In 2023, they won a sixth title. Ine-Marí Venter (born 21 April 1995) is a South African netball player in the Suncorp Super Netball league, playing for the Queensland Firebirds. Career Venter began her netball career playing for the Gauteng Jaguars in the South African Brutal Fruit Netball Cup. She was quickly selected for the South African senior national team, having previously represented the under-19 national team as early as 2014. Venter was spotted by Melbourne Vixens head coach Simone McKinnis whilst representing South Africa at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and later that year she was signed by the Vixens for the 2019 season. Marlize De Bruin
Marlize de Bruin (born 11 November 1994) is a South African sportswomen. As a netball player, she played for UP-Tuks in Varsity Netball and for Gauteng Jaguars in the Premier Netball League. She also represented the South Africa national netball team at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. As a rugby sevens player, she represented the South Africa women's national rugby sevens team at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens and at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Shadine van der Merwe (born 25 November 1992) is a South Africa netball international. She has represented South Africa at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games and at the 2019 and 2023 Netball World Cups. Jenny van Dyk is the current head coach of the South Africa national netball team. Between 2011 and 2023, van Dyk served as head coach of UP-Tuks, guiding the team to three Varsity Netball titles. Between 2014 and 2021, she also served as head coach of Gauteng Jaguars in the Premier Netball League, guiding the team to five titles. UP-Tuks Netball are a South African netball team based at the University of Pretoria. Their senior team represents the university in Varsity Netball. They also enter teams in University Sports South Africa, Netball South Africa and local Gauteng and Tshwane competitions. In addition they organise a university internal league. History South Africa UP-Tuks has a history of providing players for the South Africa national netball team. At the 2011 World Netball Championships, the South Africa squad featured five UP-Tuks players – Erin Burger, Chrisna Bootha, Amanda Mynhardt, Vanes-Mari du Toit and Leigh Ann Zackey. Jeanté Strydom (born 30 September 1996) is a South Africa netball international. She represented South Africa at the 2023 Netball World Cup. In South Africa, she played for NWU-Pukke and UP Tuks in Varsity Netball and for several teams, most notably Gauteng Jaguars, in the Premier Netball League.
