Varnupiai
Varnupiai is a small village in Marijampolė municipality, Lithuania, 4 miles southwest of Daukšiai (Marijampolė County), Daukšiai. In the south of the village is Žuvinto Palios, the swamp of Žuvintas, Žuvintas Lake. On the area of the village stands Varnupiai Mound, one of the most impressive remains of the Yotvingians culture, researched by archaeologists in 1971. Christopher Szwernicki
Father Christopher Szwernicki (; September 8, 1814 – November 26, 1894) was a Polish priest of the Congregation of Marian Fathers. In 1849, he was deported to Irkutsk, where he worked until his death as a parish priest of the largest parish in the world (which occupied all of Siberia from the Arctic Ocean to China). In 1888 he was dubbed "Apostle of Siberia" by Pope Leo XIII. Life Christopher Szwernicki was born on September 8, 1814, in the Varnupiai village near Marijampolė to Adam and Katarzyna ''née'' Woclawska. His birth name was Joseph. At age 7, he went to school at Marijampolė, first to grammar school for three years, and then to the middle school run by the Marian Fathers in their monastery. When the November Uprising began, Szwernicki enlisted in uhlan's regiment, commandeered by Józef Dwernicki. He was twice wounded, in the Battle of Stoczek and the Battle of Nowa Wieś. A ''seniūnija'' (in English: eldership, elderate, ward, parish, or subdistrict) is the smallest administrative division of Lithuania. An eldership may comprise a very small region consisting of few villages, one single town, or a part of a big city. Elderships vary in size and population depending on their location and nature. A few elderships make up a municipality. Šilainiai (Kaunas) and Dainava (Kaunas) are the most populous elderates, with population counts over , exceeding the population of some entire municipalities. Yotvingians
Yotvingians (also called: Sudovians, Jatvians, or Jatvingians; Yotvingian: ''Jotvingai''; lt, Jotvingiai, ; lv, Jātvingi; pl, Jaćwingowie, be, Яцвягі, ger, Sudauer) were a Western Baltic people who were closely tied to the Old Prussians. The linguist Petras Būtėnas asserts that they were closest to the Lithuanians. The Yotvingians contributed to the formation of the Lithuanian state. Yotvingians had a strong warrior culture and were generally well known as great warriors and hunters, and were feared by their neighbours for their skill in warfare. The Yotvingians were referred to in regional historical records into the 19th century. Žuvintas
Lake Žuvintas is a shallow lake in Alytus district, central Lithuania. Area of Žuvintas Lake is 965 ha. It is the shallowest lake in Lithuania with the greatest depth 3 m and average only 0.6 m. It is a paradise for water birds, but also faces danger of becoming a swamp. Nature reserve It is a strictly protected reserve. It is first Nature Reserve in Lithuania, established by an outstanding Lithuanian naturalist and ornithologist professor Tadas Ivanauskas (1882–1970) in 1937.
