Varenna (Comasco, Lecchese: ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) on Lake Como in the Province of Lecco in the Italian region of Lombardy, located about north of Milan and about northwest of Lecco. Villa Monastero
Villa Monastero is located in Varenna, Province of Lecco, on the shore of Lake Como. It includes a botanical garden, a museum, and a convention center, contains precious architecture, period furniture, works of art and a beautiful park that extends to Fiumelatte (river) with paths overlooking the lake, tall cypresses and many species of exotic plants. Esino Lario
Esino Lario (; Lecchese: ; locally ) is a municipality () of the Province of Lecco in the Italian region of Lombardy. It is about north of Milan, northwest of Lecco, and about from the eastern shore of Lake Como. The area around Esino Lario is surrounded by Alpine mountains, where the karst landscape has produced sink-holes and caves, including the "Icebox of Moncodeno". Castello Di Vezio
Castello di Vezio is a castle located nearby Varenna and Perledo, northern Italy. Characterized in the main tower by square merlons, similar to Cly Castle in Aosta Valley, it commands the Lake Como. It was once connected by walls to the village of Varenna below. History The castle was built in the late 11th-early 12th century and was restored several times in the following centuries. In the late 19th century, and in 1956, remains of tombs from the Iron Age, as well as weapons and armors, were found in the area. The castle also had dungeons built during the First World War, as part of the defensive ''linea Cadorna'' planned by General Luigi Cadorna, Chief of Staff of the Italian army, to halt any German invasion southward from Switzerland. Griante (Comasco: ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy, located on the western shore of Lake Como about northeast of Como between Menaggio (to the north) and Tremezzo. Lierna
Lierna is a ''comune'' in the province of Lecco in Lombardy, in north-west Italy. It lies on the eastern shore of Lake Como, about north of Milan and about north-west of Lecco. Lierna borders the comuni of Esino Lario, Mandello del Lario, Oliveto Lario and Varenna. History The first mention of Lierna dates to 854 AD, but Roman remains, including a mosaic floor now in the Palazzo Belgioioso of Lecco, attest to much earlier settlement. The name of the village may be of Roman or of Celtic origin. Between 1035 and 1202 it was a feud of the Monastery of San Dionigi in Milan. Lierna was contested between Milan and Como, and between the Della Torre and Visconti families.
