Val Medel
The Val Medel () is a righthand side valley of the Surselva valley in Graubünden, Switzerland. It is approximately long and stretches from Disentis ( above sea level) to the south, where it ends at Lai da Sontga Maria reservoir on Lukmanier Pass ( above sea level). There is a road through the valley and over Lukmanier Pass into Ticino. The lower of the valley contains a narrow gorge, known as the ''Medelserschluch'' or ''Las Ruinas'', which widens to the green and fertile Trog valley at the village of Curaglia. Settlements The only municipality in the valley is Medel, which encompasses the numerous villages, hamlets and isolated settlements on both sides of the valley. The largest and most northerly village is Curaglia. Other settlements are (from north to south) Mutschnengia, Platta, Pardes, and Fuorns Acla. Disentis
Disentis (German) or Mustér (, Romansh), with its official name Disentis/Mustér is a village and a municipality in the Surselva Region in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The skiing and summer tourism resort high up in the Rhine valley is the site of one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Switzerland. The monastery dates back to 720, its huge actual complex dates from 1696 to 1712. History Disentis is first mentioned in 765 as ''Desertina''. In 1127 it was mentioned as ''monasterium Dissertinensis''. The name Disentis is supposed to come from Latin Desertina, used for the deserted valley in late antique times, while the Romansh name Mustér refers to the monastery. Lai Da Sontga Maria
__NOTOC__ Lai da Sontga Maria (Italian: ''Lago di Santa Maria'') is a lake, located north of the Lukmanier Pass in Switzerland. It lies almost entirely in the municipality of Medel (canton of Graubünden), a tiny fraction of the south-west part of the lake belonging to the municipalities of Quinto and Blenio (canton of Ticino). The reservoir has a surface area is . The arch dam Santa Maria, which is to the north of the lake, was completed in 1968. The main road of the Lukmanier Pass runs along the eastern shore of the lake. The lake lies at a height of 1,908 metres above sea level and is surrounded by mountains over 3,000 metres on both sides. The highest peak overlooking Lai da Sontga Maria is the Scopi (3,190 m), on the east side. On the west side are Piz Gannaretsch (3,040 m) and Piz Rondadura (3,016 m). Medel () is a municipality in the Surselva Region in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. History Medel (Lucmagn) is first mentioned in 1315 as ''de valle Mederis''. Tujetsch
Tujetsch (; german: Tavetsch) is a municipality in the Surselva Region in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. It is the westernmost municipality of the canton, connected to Urseren (canton of Uri) by the Oberalp Pass. History The upper Surselva was first settled in the 9th century, following the foundation of Disentis Abbey, as part of the '' Cadi'' (feudal possessions of the abbey). In the 12th century, the Walser migrated across Oberalp Pass. Sedrun parish church was first consecrated in 1205. Both Romansh and Walser communities lived exclusively in dispersed settlements well into the early modern period. The Walser were mostly Romanized, but some Alemannic toponymy remains on the left bank of the Rhine. Sursilvan (; also ''romontsch sursilvan'' ; Sursilvan, Vallader, Surmiran, Sutsilvan, and Rumantsch Grischun: ''sursilvan''; Puter: ''sursilvaun'') is a group of dialects of the Romansh language spoken in the Switzerland, Swiss district of Surselva District, Surselva.
