Unilink
Unilink is the branded bus service operated under contract and serving the University of Southampton in Hampshire, England. The service was created in 1998 following the university's expansion onto several new campuses, requiring new transport links between them. The current contractor of the service is Bluestar, part of the Go-Ahead Group, who took over in 2008. The service also encourages use by members of the public outside the university community. History Foundations The foundations for the service began with the opening of the Southampton Oceanography Centre in 1996. Located in Southampton Docks, this was the first of the university's campuses that were not either within walking distance of the main campus or were self-contained (whose students had no need to travel to a different campus – Winchester School of Art and Southampton General Hospital being the main examples). Bluestar (bus Company)
Solent Blue Line Limited, trading under the name Bluestar, is a bus operator providing services in Southampton and the surrounding areas of Hampshire. It is a subsidiary of the Go South Coast sector of the Go-Ahead Group. History Origins In 1987, Musterphantom Limited was created by John Chadwick and Peter Shelley. £100,000 was then raised to start operations in May 1987. £75,000 of which came from Southern Vectis, with the new company ending up as a subsidiary. The new company received old Southern Vectis Bristol VRTs to start operating. Chadwick & Shelley (both former managers at Citybus) and Southern Vectis both wanted to challenge the position of Southampton Citybus, which operated most routes within Southampton. Highfield Campus
Highfield Campus is the main campus of the University of Southampton and is located in Southampton, southern England. It is the largest of the university's campuses with most of the students studying there. The campus is also the location of the main university library, the students' union as well as sports facilities. History Early 20th century The university's predecessor, the Hartley Institute, first bought the Highfield site in June 1909 at the cost of £5,000. Their old premises on the High Street no longer met the requirements of the Ministry of Education (United Kingdom), Board of Education and the HM Treasury, Treasury and so a new site was required for the college to expand. First Hampshire & Dorset is a bus operator providing services in the counties of Hampshire and Dorset. It is a subsidiary of FirstGroup. History Formation First Hampshire & Dorset was created out of various different smaller companies which were merged once FirstGroup had acquired them. In October 1995 FirstGroup purchased the bus services in Fareham, Gosport and Portsmouth operated by People's Provincial. In April 1996 FirstGroup purchased services in Portsmouth from Transit Holdings trading as Buses in Portsmouth#Deregulation and changes of operator (1986–1991), Red Admiral & Blue Admiral, which in turn had taken over the Portsmouth CityBus operations under the title of Southdown Portsmouth. Avenue Campus
Avenue Campus is a campus of the University of Southampton and is located in Southampton, England. It currently houses most of the university's Faculty of Humanities. It is located off A33 road, The Avenue, borders Southampton Common and is less than a mile from the university's main Highfield Campus. History Prior to the campus site being occupied by the university, the site was home to Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, Taunton's School, a former grammar school for boys, of which the main building still stands as part of the main campus building. The foundation stone of the main building was laid in 1925 and the building opened a year later at a cost of £48,286. Go South Coast is a bus operator on the south coast of England. It is a subsidiary of the Go-Ahead Group. All services under the company come under its operating certificate, however the buses run under a multitude of brands. History In August 2003 the Go-Ahead Group purchased the business of Wilts & Dorset, including its Damory Coaches and Tourist Group subsidiaries, followed in July 2005 by Southern Vectis including its Bluestar (bus company), Solent Blue Line subsidiary. Portswood
Portswood is a suburb and electoral ward of Southampton, England. The suburb lies to the north-north-east of the city centre and is bounded by (clockwise from west) Freemantle, Highfield, Swaythling, St. Denys and Bevois Valley.
