Highfield Campus
Highfield Campus is the main campus of the University of Southampton and is located in Southampton, southern England. It is the largest of the university's campuses with most of the students studying there. The campus is also the location of the main university library, the students' union as well as sports facilities. History Early 20th century The university's predecessor, the Hartley Institute, first bought the Highfield site in June 1909 at the cost of £5,000. Their old premises on the High Street no longer met the requirements of the Ministry of Education (United Kingdom), Board of Education and the HM Treasury, Treasury and so a new site was required for the college to expand. The first campus buildings were opened on 20 June 1914 by the Lord Chancellor, Richard Haldane, 1st Viscount Haldane, Viscount Haldane. Electronics and Computer Science, generally abbreviated "ECS", at the University of Southampton was founded in 1946 by Professor Erich Zepler. It offers 23 undergraduate courses (in computer science, Web Science, electronic engineering, electrical and electromechanical engineering and IT in organisations), 11 MSc intensive one-year taught programmes and PhD research opportunities. ECS was the first academic institution in the world to adopt a self-archiving mandate (2001) and since then much of its published research has been freely available on the Web. RAE Farnborough
The Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) was a British research establishment, known by several different names during its history, that eventually came under the aegis of the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), before finally losing its identity in mergers with other institutions. The British Army Balloon Factory was established on Farnborough Common in the early 1900s. By 1912 it had come under civilian control and was the Royal Aircraft Factory (RAF) In 1918 it was renamed Royal Aircraft Establishment to prevent confusion with the newly created Royal Air Force. R J Mitchell Wind Tunnel
The R. J. Mitchell Wind Tunnel is a low-speed wind tunnel which is part of the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton. It is the largest wind tunnel in University ownership in the UK. It is named after famed British aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell. History The tunnel was built in the 1930s as part of the Farnborough Royal Aircraft Establishment cluster of tunnels. The tunnel was purchased by the University of Southampton for a minimal fee in 1979 on the understanding that they would cover the cost of transport and recommissioning at its new site on the Highfield Campus. This purchase was in response to a business case put forward at the time which focused around the need for more capacity to cope with increasing motorsport demand. Sheppard Robson (previously Richard Sheppard, Robson & Partners) is a British architecture firm, founded in 1938 by Richard Sheppard (architect), Sir Richard Herbert Sheppard, with offices in London, Manchester, and Glasgow. Brutalist architecture is an architectural style that emerged during the 1950s in the United Kingdom, among the reconstruction projects of the post-war era. Brutalist buildings are characterised by Minimalism (art), minimalist constructions that showcase the bare building materials and Structural engineering, structural elements over decorative design.
