UJ Netball
University of Johannesburg Netball Club, commonly known as UJ Netball, are a South African netball team based at Kingsway Campus Auckland Park at the University of Johannesburg. Their senior team represents the university in Varsity Netball. They also enter teams in University Sports South Africa, Netball South Africa and local Gauteng competitions. In addition they organise a University of Johannesburg netball league. History Varsity Netball In August 2019, Bongiwe Msomi, South Africa's captain, was appointed UJ Netball's head coach. In 2022, UJ Netball played in the semi-final stages of Varsity Netball for the first time. In 2023, Msomi guided UJ Netball to their first Varsity Netball final. However, they finished as runners up after losing 63–61 to UP-Tuks in the final. In 2024, Msomi guided UJ Netball to the final for the second consecutive year. Kingsway Campus Auckland Park
Kingsway Campus Auckland Park, also known as APK, is the largest and most populated of the four campuses of the University of Johannesburg. It is also the seat of the administration and governance body of the university. The campus was formerly the only educational campus of the Rand Afrikaans University. The campus gets its name from a major Johannesburg road, Kingsway Avenue, that runs along the north-east side of the campus. The roads that form the boundary of the campus are (clock-wise) University Road, Ditton Avenue, Ripley Road, Hampton Avenue, Studente Avenue, Akademie Road and Perth Road. Although the official name of the campus implies that it is in Auckland Park, it actually falls just out of that suburb by one street. Gauteng Golden Fireballs
The Premier Netball League is the top level netball league featuring teams from South Africa. It was formed in 2014 and is organised by Netball South Africa. Between 2014 and 2018, due to sponsorship and naming rights arrangements, the league was known as the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup. Since 2019, the league has been sponsored by Telkom and, as a result, it is widely known as the Telkom Netball League. In 2014, Free State Crinums were the inaugural winners. Gauteng Jaguars are the league's most successful team, having won six titles. The league features two divisions and uses a promotion and relegation format. UP-Tuks Netball are a South African netball team based at the University of Pretoria. Their senior team represents the university in Varsity Netball. They also enter teams in University Sports South Africa, Netball South Africa and local Gauteng and Tshwane competitions. In addition they organise a university internal league. History South Africa UP-Tuks has a history of providing players for the South Africa national netball team. At the 2011 World Netball Championships, the South Africa squad featured five UP-Tuks players – Erin Burger, Chrisna Bootha, Amanda Mynhardt, Vanes-Mari du Toit and Leigh Ann Zackey. On the club, national and international level, men's netball teams exist, but attract less attention than women's netball. Mixed teams are not uncommon in Australia and are very popular.
