Toamasina
Toamasina (), meaning "like salt" or "salty", unofficially and in French Tamatave, is the capital of the Atsinanana region on the east coast of Madagascar on the Indian Ocean. The city is the chief seaport of the country, situated northeast of its capital and biggest city Antananarivo. In 2018 Toamasina had a population of 325,857. History Under French rule, Toamasina was the seat of several foreign consuls, as well as of numerous French officials, and was the chief port for the capital and the interior. Imports consisted principally of piece-goods, farinaceous foods, and iron and steel goods; main exports were gold dust, raffia, hides, caoutchouc (natural rubber) and live animals. Districts Of Madagascar
Districts are second-level administrative divisions of Madagascar below the regions. There are 114 districts in Madagascar. Districts are in their turn divided into communes; while some of the districts in urban areas (such as the City districts of Antananarivo, Antsirabe I, Antsiranana I, Fianarantsoa I, Toamasina I and Toliara I) and offshore islands (such as the districts of Nosy Be and Nosy Boraha) each consist of only one commune, most of the districts are divided typically into 5–20 communes. Canal Des Pangalanes
The Canal des Pangalanes is a canal that consists of a series of natural rivers, waterways and human-made lakes that extends for over and runs down the east coast of Madagascar from Mahavelona to Farafangana. It is used primarily for transportation and fishing, and it has unspoiled natural beaches that are visited by tourists. An initial area of the canal in Toamasina (unofficially and in French referred to as Tamatave) is straight, while subsequent areas have curves, lagoons, connected lakes and swamps. Construction efforts began during the era of the Merina monarchy, with major expansion during the French colonial period between 1896 and 1904, and additional expansion during 1949–1957. Atsinanana
Atsinanana is a coastal region in eastern Madagascar. It borders Analanjirofo region in the north, Alaotra-Mangoro in the west, Vakinankaratra and Amoron'i Mania in the southwest, and Vatovavy and Fitovinany in south. The region contains over 285km of coastline, which includes many beaches and cultural heritage sites. Atsinanana is known for its fish breeding and fishing near its ports, ore claims and mining activity, as well as its agriculture. The capital of the region is Toamasina, and the population was 1,484,403 in 2018. The area of Atsinanana is , almost exactly the same as its neighbor, Analanjirofo. Betsimisaraka People
The Betsimisaraka ("the many inseparables") are the second largest ethnic group in Madagascar after the Merina and make up approximately fifteen percent of the Malagasy people. They occupy a large stretch of the eastern coastal region of Madagascar, from Mananjary in the south to Antalaha in the north. The Betsimisaraka have a long history of extensive interaction with European seafarers and traders that produced a significant subset with mixed European-Malagasy origins, termed the ''zana-malata''. European influence is evident in the local ''valse'' (waltz) and ''basesa'' musical genres, which are typically performed on the accordion. ''Tromba'' (spirit possession) ceremonies feature strongly in Betsimisaraka culture. The Ivondro River in Alaotra-Mangoro and Atsinanana regions, is located in central-eastern Madagascar. It drains to the eastern coast. Rail Transport In Madagascar
Rail transport in Madagascar is primarily operated by Madarail. There are two unconnected systems having a total length of , as of 2006, all metre gauge, . The northern railway (TCE, Tananarive–Côte Est) is currently concessioned to Maragall. The southern line, Fianarantsoa-Côte-Est railway (FCE), is a parastatal (state owned) line. History Construction started in 1901 on the Madagascar Railway (Le Chemin-de-Fer de Madagascar) from Tananarive to Ambatolampy. The full line was completed from Tananarive to Antsirabe in 1923. Operations There is a regular (at least daily) goods traffic between the port city of Toamasina and the capital city of Antananarivo. There are daily passenger trains on the Madarail system. Route nationale 5 (RN5) is a primary highway in Madagascar of 402 km. The route runs from Toamasina to Maroantsetra, a city on the eastern coast of the Madagascar. The first 160 km until Soanierana Ivongo are paved and in good condition, but the remaining is unpaved and in a bad state of conservation. Several rivers must be crossed by ferry boats. The part from Soanierana Ivongo to Mananara Avaratra is scheduled to be paved in 2022.
