The Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family () are the descendants of the 16th Baron Saye and Sele who was born Frederick Benjamin Twisleton and adopted the surname Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes in 1849 by Act of Parliament. He was the grandson of Thomas Twisleton, 13th Baron Saye and Sele and inherited the barony from his first cousin William Thomas Eardley-Twisleton-Fiennes in 1847. Baron Saye and Sele is a title in the Peerage of England held by the Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family. The title dates to 1447 but it was recreated in 1603. Confusion over the details of the 15th-century title has led to conflicting order for titleholders; authorities such as ''Burke's Peerage'' and ''Debrett's Peerage'' do not agree on whether or not the 1447 creation is still extant. Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 3rd Baronet (born 7 March 1944), commonly known as Sir Ranulph Fiennes () and sometimes as Ran Fiennes, is a British explorer, writer and poet, who holds several endurance records. Fiennes served in the British Army for eight years, including a period on counter-insurgency service while attached to the Army of the Sultanate of Oman. He later undertook numerous expeditions and was the first person to visit both the North Pole and South Pole by surface means and the first to completely cross Antarctica on foot. Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes (; born 22 December 1962) is an English actor, film producer, and director. Frederick Fiennes, 16th Baron Saye And Sele
The Venerable Frederick Fiennes, 16th Baron Saye and Sele, MA (1799–1887) was Archdeacon of Hereford from 1863 to 1887. Life Fiennes was born Frederick Benjamin Twisleton on 4 July 1799, a son of Thomas James Twisleton. He was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1823 and spent his whole career at Hereford Cathedral. He was appointed Prebendary in 1825; Treasurer in 1832 and Canon Residentiary in 1840. He succeeded a cousin to the title of Baron Saye and Sele in 1847 and legally changed his surname to Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes in 1849, although the name is frequently shortened to Fiennes. As Baron Saye and Sele, he arranged restoration work on the family home of Broughton Castle but the house had to be let to tenants from 1885. He died on 25 May 1887. Nathaniel Thomas Allen Fiennes, 21st Baron Saye and Sele, (né Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes; 22 September 1920 – 20 January 2024), styled as Lord Saye and Sele, was an English peer, businessman, chartered surveyor and army officer. Early life and education Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes was born on 22 September 1920, the son of Ivo Murray Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 20th Baron Saye and Sele, and Hersey Cecilia Hester Butler. Despite a family connection with Winchester College, he was educated at Eton and then at New College, Oxford. While still a student at Eton, he played cricket at minor counties level for Oxfordshire, making a single appearance in the 1938 Minor Counties Championship against Cornwall. Broughton Castle is a medieval fortified manor house in the village of Broughton, which is about southwest of Banbury in Oxfordshire, England, on the B4035 road (). William Of Wykeham
William of Wykeham (; 1320 or 1324 – 27 September 1404) was Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England. He founded New College, Oxford, and New College School in 1379, and founded Winchester College in 1382. He was also the clerk of works when much of Windsor Castle was built. Early life William of Wykeham (born William Longe) was the son of John Longe, a freeman from Wickham in Hampshire. He was educated at a school in Winchester, and probably enjoyed early patronage from two local men, Sir Ralph Sutton, constable of Winchester Castle, and Sir John Scures, lord of the manor of Wickham, and then from Thomas Foxley, Constable of Windsor Castle. Viscount Saye And Sele
Viscount Saye and Sele was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created on 7 July 1624 for William Fiennes, 8th Baron Saye and Sele, who thus became the 1st Viscount Saye and Sele. The title became extinct on the death of Richard Fiennes 6th Viscount on 29 July 1781. Succession Under James I of England, William Fiennes, the eighth Baron Saye and Sele, was created Viscount Saye and Sele in the Peerage of England, in 1624. On the death of his son, the second Viscount, the two titles separated.
