Transitions (film)
''Transitions'' is the first full-colour 3-D film, 3D IMAX film, created for the Canada Pavilion at Expo 86, co-directed by Colin Low (filmmaker), Colin Low and Tony Ianzelo and produced by the National Film Board of Canada. It was built upon ''We Are Born of Stars'' created for Expo '85 in Tskuba, Japan, which used anaglyph 3D. The film is also notable for the first use of stereoscopic computer animation. Production Canadian National, the main sponsor of the Canada Place, Canada Pavilion, asked the NFB to produce a film about transportation in Canada, in keeping with the fair's theme “Transportation and Communications”. The film's computer animation sequence was produced by the Centre d'animatique unit of the NFB's French animation studio, credited to Daniel Langlois, shortly before he left the NFB to found Softimage (company), Softimage. Colin Low (filmmaker)
Colin Archibald Low (July 24, 1926 – February 24, 2016) was a Canadian animation and documentary filmmaker with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). He was known as a pioneer, one of Canada's most important filmmakers, and was regularly referred to as "the gentleman genius". His numerous honors include five British Academy Film Awards, BAFTA awards, eight Cannes Film Festival awards, and six Academy Awards, Academy Award nominations. Early life Low was born and raised in Cardston, Alberta, to Gerald and Marion Low, ranchers who were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The town borders the Kainai Nation (Blood Tribe), which later became the subject of two of his films; his 1960 film ''Circle of the Sun'' marked the first time the Kainai Nation's sacred Sun Dance was filmed. The Universal Exhibition of Seville 1992 – Expo '92 (officially: ) was a universal exhibition held from Monday 20 April to Monday 12 October 1992, at the , in Seville, Spain. The theme for the expo was "The Age of Discoveries", celebrating the Columbus Quincentenary, 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus reaching the Americas, and over 100 countries were represented. The site of the exposition covered and the total number of visitors was 41,814,571. The exposition ran at the same time as the smaller and shorter-duration Genoa Expo '92, a Specialized Exhibition, held in memory of Christopher Columbus in Genoa. IMAX Short Films
IMAX is a proprietary system of high-resolution cameras, film formats, film projectors, and theaters known for having very large screens with a tall aspect ratio (approximately either 1.43:1 or 1.90:1) and steep stadium seating, with the 1.43:1 ratio format being available only in few selected locations. Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, Robert Kerr, and William C. Shaw were the co-founders of what would be named the IMAX Corporation (founded in September 1967 as Multiscreen Corporation, Ltd.), and they developed the first IMAX cinema projection standards in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Canada.
