Torregrotta Railway Station
''Torregrotta railway station'' is a railway station serving the small town of Torregrotta, in the north-east of Sicily, Italy. The station also serves nearby villages including Monforte San Giorgio, Roccavaldina and Valdina. It is located on the Palermo–Messina railway and all trains calling there are operated by Trenitalia. The current station, opened on 23 November 2009, replaces an earlier one dating from the early years of the twentieth century and closed on 9 August 2009. History The section between Messina and San Filippo of the Palermo-Messina Railway was opened on 20 June 1889 but no passenger facilities were provided at Torregrotta until the early years of the twentieth century. The first station was originally opened as ''Scala'' and later renamed as ''Roccavaldina - Scala - Torregrotta''. Torregrotta ( Sicilian: ''Turri'') is a small town and municipality (''comune'') in the Metropolitan City of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, located about east of Palermo and about west of Messina. It is the twelfth most populous municipality in the Metropolitan City and the most densely populated. The urban area, located at 44 m a.s.l. in the Niceto valley, it stretches between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the first Peloritani mountains. Originally built in medieval times as a farmhouse of the Santa Maria della Scala fief, it was rebuilt since 1526 after a period of neglect. At the beginning of the 19th century, it became a sub-municipality of Roccavaldina from which it obtained administrative autonomy in 1923. Trenitalia
Trenitalia is the primary train operator in Italy. A subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, itself owned by the Italian government, the company was established in 2000 following a European Union directive on the deregulation of rail transport. History The Italian government formed Trenitalia to comply with European regulations. The European Commission's First Railway Directive from 1991 (91/440/EC) required separation of accounting between entities which manage the rail infrastructure and entities which provide the actual rail transportation. Palermo Centrale is the main railway station of the Italian city of Palermo, capital of Sicily. It is one of the most important " FS" stations of Italy.
