Trenitalia
Trenitalia Società per azioni, SpA is the primary train operator of Italy. A subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, itself owned by the Italian government. It was established in 2000 following a European Union directive on the deregulation of rail transport. In a comparative study by the European umbrella organization European Federation for Transport and Environment, Transport & Environment (T&E), Trenitalia 2024 achieved the best result of 27 companies. The criteria were reliability, booking, amenities on board and taking bikes on medium and long-distance connections. ETR 1000
The Frecciarossa 1000 is a High-speed rail, high-speed train operated by Italian state railway operator Trenitalia and the private Spanish high-speed rail operator Iryo. It was co-developed as a joint venture between Italian rail manufacturer Hitachi Rail Italy (initially AnsaldoBreda) and multinational conglomerate Alstom (initially Bombardier Transportation). Both design and production work were divided between the two partner companies. Design work on the train began in 2008, with considerable design work performed by Michael Vernon Robinson, Mike Robinson and Gruppo Bertone, Bertone. It was heavily based on existing products, including Bombardier's Bombardier Zefiro, Zefiro and Hitachi Rail Italy, AnsaldoBreda's AnsaldoBreda V250, V250 trains. ''Frecciarossa'' (; from , "red arrow") is a high-speed train of the Italian national train operator, Trenitalia, as well as a member of the train category Le Frecce. The name was introduced in 2008 after it had previously been known as Eurostar Italia. ''Frecciarossa'' trains operate at speeds of up to . Iryo
Iryo is the brand of ''Intermodalidad de Levante S.A.'' (ILSA), a private high-speed rail operator in Spain. The company is jointly owned by the Italian state-owned railway company Trenitalia (51%), the Spanish regional airline Air Nostrum (25%), and the Spanish infrastructure investment fund Globalvia (24%). During the late 2010s, ILSA worked to secure the necessary approval and resources to launch the service. During early 2022, it was announced that the company had attracted the interest of Globalvia, which subsequently joined with the two original founding companies in the venture. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is the Italian railway infrastructure manager, subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS), a state-owned holding company. RFI is the owner of Italy's railway network, it provides signalling, maintenance and other services for the railway network. It also operates train ferries between the Italian Peninsula and Sicily. RFI's origins can be traced back to a series of railway sector reforms enacted by the Italian government during the late 1980s and 1990s. ''Frecciargento'' (; from , "silver arrow") is a high-speed train of the Italian national train operator, Trenitalia, as one of its '' Le Frecce'' brands (along with '' Frecciarossa'' and '' Frecciabianca''). The name was introduced in 2012; these trains were previously branded as Eurostar Italia. ''Frecciargento'' trains operate at speeds of up to . In May 2022, it was announced by Trenitalia's CEO Luigi Corradi that, starting from summer 2022, the ''Frecciargento'' brand will be phased out. Mercitalia (also known as Mercitalia Rail) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Italian state railway (FSI) system that operates freight transport and logistics services both within Italy and across Europe. It was founded in early 2016 as a major element of the FSI's reorganisation of the Italian railway system to more efficiently operate freight services. Early on, ambitious investment programmes for the acquisition of large numbers of new locomotives and rolling stock were launched; this new fleet would facilitate the ultimate goal of pursuing international freight services and other logistical opportunities across the European Union. The Single European Railway Directive 20122012/34/EU is an EU Directive that regulates railway networks in European Union law. This recast the First Railway Directive 91/440/EEC and consolidates legislation from each of the first to the fourth "Package" from 1991 to 2016, and allows open access operations on railway lines by companies other than those that own the rail infrastructure. The legislation was extended by further directives to include cross border transit of freight. In September 2010, the process of merging the directives into a single piece of legislation was begun, with the addition of modifications to strengthen the regulatory framework.
