Tornquist, Buenos Aires
Tornquist is a town in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It is the head town of the Tornquist Partido. History The settlement was founded on 17 April 1883 by Ernesto Tornquist and was settled by Germans and Volga Germans. Historically, the economy was based on livestock and agricultural production and was later supplemented by a growing tourism sector related to the scenic Ventana System, a minor mountain range of 195 km (121 mi) NW to SE that dominates the flat countryside. The development of the railway favored the city's future and prominent community centers were established along ethnic ties, such as the headquarters of the Germanic Society, the Hogar Funke (a summer home for elderly Germans), and the Barraca Funke. The Tornquist Sea or Tornquist Ocean was a sea located between the palaeocontinents Avalonia and Baltica about . The remains of the sea today form a suture stretching across northern Europe (Tornquist Zone). Geologic evolution It probably formed at the same time (c. 600 Ma) as the Iapetus Ocean. Gondwana, including Avalonia until Early Ordovician, was separate from Baltica throughout the Cambrian. It probably closed during the Late Ordovician at the time of the Shelveian Orogeny of western England. There are faunal, palaeomagnetic, palaeogeographic, and apparent polar wander path evidence for the timing of closure for Eastern Avalonia (England, Wales and southern Ireland) and Baltica. The Baltica-Avalonia collision also resulted in that the Rheic Ocean ceased to expand south of Avalonia around 450 Ma, in huge magmatism in Avalonia, gigantic ash fall in Baltica, and metamorphism in present-day northern Germany. Ernesto Carlos Tornquist (31 December 1842 – 17 June 1908) was an Argentinian entrepreneur and businessman, considered to be one of the most important entrepreneurs in Argentina at the end of the 19th century. The diversified business empire he created played a key role in helping to link Argentina with the trading and financial systems of the first world. Evelyn Tornquist Karlsson (born Evelyn Tornquist on March 29, 1956), mononymously known as Evie, is an American contemporary Christian music singer who was known in the late 1970s and early 1980s for songs such as "Mirror", "Step into the Sunshine" and "Four Foot Eleven". Born in the United States to Norwegian immigrants, Evie began her singing career as a young teenager while visiting her parents' homeland. She released her English language debut album at 16 in 1972, and went on to release more than 30 albums, including several in various Scandinavian languages. Evie was recognized as the Dove Award recipient of Female Vocalist of the Year for 1977 and 1978. John Törnquist
John Törnquist (17 November 1876 – 1937) was a Swedish missionary. He served with the Swedish Missionary Society in Chinese Turkestan (present day Xinjiang). Törnquist first arrived in Eastern Turkestan on 24 September 1904 and married Ellen Rosén on 15 May 1906. Their daughter, Ester Karin, died age 1, in Kashgar on 6 January 1911. Törnquist was the longest serving missionary of the Swedish Missionary Society in Chinese Turkestan. For long periods he was the only one in the field working specifically among the Chinese. The Xinjiang missionaries from Sweden who worked among Chinese weren't very many. Most of them worked among the Uyghurs. Einar Tørnquist Johansen (born 23 June 1982) is a Norwegian drummer and talk-show host. He hosts the eponymous Tørnquist-show which is available from VG's, Norway's largest newspaper, web-TV. Ragnar Tørnquist (born 31 July 1970) is a Norwegian game designer and author. He has been working for Funcom in Oslo since 1994, and has founded his own studio Red Thread Games in November 2012. Biography Tørnquist studied art, history and English at St Clare's, a school in Oxford from 1987 to 1989. From 1989 to 1990, he studied philosophy and English at the University of Oslo. After that, from 1990 to 1993 he attended the Undergraduate Film and Television department at the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. His influences included Joss Whedon and Neil Gaiman. In 1994, he returned to Oslo, Norway and started working for Funcom as producer, designer, writer, and level-editor of the video game adaptation of '' Casper''.
