Topsy Chapman
Topsy Chapman (1947–2022) was a Jazz and Gospel musician from New Orleans, New Orleans, Louisiana. Early life Chapman was born in Kentwood, Louisiana. She sang and played piano at the age of 3 and was considered a musical prodigy. By the age of 6 or 7, she was earning money performing in churches. Career Chapman moved to New Orleans when she was 17 where she led her family's Gospel group, The Chapmans. Playwright and director, Vernel Bagneris, recruited the group to appear in his production on 'One Mo' Time'. The show ran at Toulouse Theatre and later premiered Off-Broadway. Chapman performed with her daughters, Yolanda Robinson and Jolynda Phillips, under the group name Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony. Chapman often performed at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, New Orleans Jazz Fest and was well known in the New Orleans music scene. Death Chapman died in 2022. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its roots are in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville song, and dance music. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. Gospel music is a traditional genre of Christian music and a cornerstone of Christian media. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music vary according to culture and social context. Kentwood, Louisiana
Kentwood is a rural town in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States, near the Mississippi state line. The population was 2,198 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hammond MSA. Kentwood is best known as the hometown of singer Britney Spears. History Amos Kent assisted in laying out the town. The Postmaster named the town in honor of Kent on February 29, 1888. On August 30, 2012, damage was caused by pressure on the 2,300 foot Percy Quin dam, a dam on the Tangipahoa River north of Kentwood, as a result of Hurricane Isaac, led to Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal calling for a mandatory evacuation of the town due to fears of large-scale flooding from Lake Tangipahoa. Vernel Martin Bagneris (born July 31, 1949) is an American playwright, theater director, and entertainer. Early life Bagneris was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, the third child of Gloria Diaz Bagneris and Lawrence Bagneris, Sr. His mother was a deeply Catholic housewife,Wendi Berman: Interview with Vernel Bagneris, March 2, 2007 for ''The African American National Biography'' (Oxford 2008). and his father was a World War II veteran and postal clerk. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (commonly called Jazz Fest or Jazzfest) is an annual celebration of local music and culture held at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, New Orleans, Louisiana. Jazz Fest attracts thousands of visitors to New Orleans each year. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation Inc., as it is officially named, was established in 1970 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (NPO).
