Tongmungwan
Tongmungwan or Tongmunkwan () is a historic book store in Seoul, South Korea. It is the oldest active book store in the country, having been founded in 1934. It has remained a family business since its establishment. It has served mainly academics, and reportedly has had a significant impact in the study of Korean history. The business was designated a Seoul Future Heritage in 2013. It is also an Oraegage, a store of historic value. Description The predecessor to the book store was called Geummundang (). In 1934, 25 year old employee Lee Gyeom-ro () acquired the business and renamed it Geumhakdang (). The store received its current name in 1945; it is named for a Goryeo-era government office. Upon the outbreak of the 1950–1953 Korean War, Lee fled with an 80-volume set of books that documented the military history of Joseon for safekeeping. Lee became a famed collector of rare books. Dongyang Bookstore
Dongyang Bookstore () is a historic bookstore in Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the oldest active bookstores in Seoul, having been founded in 1953. It is a designated Seoul Future Heritage. It was initially located in Hyehwa-dong, before moving to its current location in 1954. Its founder was Lee Sun-gyeong (), the wife of painter Chang Ucchin and daughter of Yi Pyong-do. She reportedly served as the breadwinner between her and her husband, through the business. In 1987, she handed off the business to her long-time employee Choi Ju-bo (). In 2004, Choi handed the business off to her daughter, So-yeong (). By 2019, the younger Choi was still the CEO. After the business was designated a Seoul Future Heritage in the 2010s, the Seoul Metropolitan Government provided funds for its renovation. Oraegage
Oraegage (), also stylized as OraeGage and translated to Seoul Historical Store, is a designation by the Seoul Metropolitan Government for long-running businesses. The program recognizes such businesses, offers them support, and provides information on them for tourists. It has been running since 2017. The name of the program means literally "old store", but reportedly also has a meaning of "store that is wanted to be even older". The program reportedly selects entries in its list by scouting the city, conducting interviews and verifying aspects of the business, and narrowing down candidates. Members of the list reportedly have been running for over 30 years or have been owned by at least two generations. Samguk Yusa
''Samguk yusa'' (; ) or ''Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms'' is a collection of legends, folktales, and historical accounts relating to the Three Kingdoms of Korea (Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla), as well as to other periods and states before, during, and after the Three Kingdoms period. It was compiled by the Buddhism, Buddhist monk Il-yeon in the late Goryeo dynasty, around 1280.
