Oraegage
Oraegage (), also stylized as OraeGage and translated to Seoul Historical Store, is a designation by the Seoul Metropolitan Government for long-running businesses. The program recognizes such businesses, offers them support, and provides information on them for tourists. It has been running since 2017. The name of the program means literally "old store", but reportedly also has a meaning of "store that is wanted to be even older". The program reportedly selects entries in its list by scouting the city, conducting interviews and verifying aspects of the business, and narrowing down candidates. Members of the list reportedly have been running for over 30 years or have been owned by at least two generations. Various types of businesses are included in the designation, including restaurants, pharmacies, book stores, beauty salons, and more. Koohasanbang
Koohasanbang (), also spelled Guhasanbang, is a historic calligraphy supplies store () in Seoul, South Korea. It is the reportedly the first dedicated calligraphy supplies store in Korea, having been founded in 1913. It has been designated an Oraegage and Seoul Future Heritage by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The store has been in downtown Seoul for over a century. It moved locations several times within downtown Seoul. The store reportedly supplied Ink brush, brushes to the Korean emperors Gojong of Korea, Gojong and Sunjong of Korea, Sunjong. It also reportedly supplied a number of famous Korean calligraphers and artists over time. The store reportedly produces over 500 varieties of ink brushes, with the tips made of different materials. HY Tailor
HY Tailor or Han Young Tailor () is a historic tailor shop in Seoul, South Korea. It was established in 1932, and specializes in customized suits. In 2012, it was designated a Seoul Future Heritage. It is also a designated Oraegage, a store of historic value. The shop has been visited by both major South Korean politicians, including presidents Kim Dae-jung and Moon Jae-in, and by foreign politicians, including Japanese prime minister Tomiichi Murayama. The store was established by a Park Jeong-jae (). During the 1950–1953 Korean War, the business went on hiatus as Park fled to Busan for safety. Lee Seong-ho () took over the business in 1964, and moved it to a new location in 1968. In 1995, Lee passed the business onto his son, Lee Han-yeol (). Biwon Tteokjip
Biwon Tteokjip () is a historic ''tteok'' (Korean rice cake) store in Seoul, South Korea. It was established in 1949, and has remained a family business since then. It was run by the third generation of the family by the 2010s. In 2017, it was designated an Oraegage, a store of historic value, by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. It is also a Seoul Future Heritage. It is listed on the Blue Ribbon Survey, a South Korean restaurant guide. The store's recipes descend from those of Han Hui-sun (; 1889–1972), whom was reportedly one of the last royal court ladies of Joseon. She supervised the palace kitchens during the reigns of the final Korean monarchs Gojong and Sunjong. She handed her recipes down to Hong Gan-nan (; 1925–1999). Hong opened Biwon Tteokjip in 1949. Gaemi Supermarket
Gaemi Supermarket () is a historic neighborhood grocery store in Seogye-dong, Yongsan District, Seoul, South Korea. It has been in continuous operation since the 1900s, and has become a tourist attraction for the city. In 2018, it was designated an Oraegage, a historic business, by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The store once served the surrounding sewing industry in the area. After the sewing industry declined in the 2000s, the store's prospects also declined. However, beginning around the 2010s, it reportedly became a popular tourist attraction among foreign visitors to Korea. A nearby wall displays numerous photos the store's own took with visitors. Chong Ro Tailor (), also spelled Jongno Tailor, is a historic tailor shop in Seoul, South Korea. It is among the oldest active tailor shops in South Korea, having been founded in 1916. It has remained a family business since then, and is currently operated by the third generation of the family. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has designated it an Oraegage, a store of historic value, and a Seoul Future Heritage. The store was founded in 1916, near Bosingak in Jongno District. Its founder was Lee Du-yong (), whom studied tailoring in Japan. In the 1940s, the store was moved to Jongno 1-ga. Mapo District () is one of the 25 districts of Seoul, South Korea.
