Timber Drop
Timber Drop is a steel roller coaster located at the Fraispertuis City amusement park in Jeanménil, France. With a slope of 113.1°, the coaster held the world record for the steepest drop in the world from 1 July 2011 to 16 July 2011 and currently holds the record for the steepest roller coaster drop in Europe. History On 8 October 2010 at the trade show of the Euro Attractions Show in Rome, Fraispertuis City finalized the purchase of a new roller coaster to be built by S&S – Sansei Technologies. Named Timber Drop, the coaster was inaugurated on 1 July 2011 and opened to the public the next day. The coaster is an "El Loco" model, of which there are variants in five other parks. When Timber Drop was installed, two other El Loco coasters existed: One named Steel Hawg at Indiana Beach in the United States and another named Mumbo Jumbo at Flamingo Land Theme Park & Zoo in England. El Loco is a model of steel roller coaster manufactured by S&S Worldwide. The rides are characterised by a vertical or beyond-vertical drop, tight corners and abnormal banking. As of November 2013, there are six El Locos operating around the world. History The first El Loco was Steel Hawg at Indiana Beach. The ride was announced in November 2007 as having a 120° first drop and a planned opening date in mid-May 2008. However, these were revised to a drop angle of 111° and an opening date on July 5, 2008. The ride drop angle was the steepest in the world at the time, taking the record from a series of Gerstlauer Euro-Fighters which shared the record with drops of 97°. Fraispertuis City is a theme park in Jeanménil, France. It opened in 1966. Its roller coaster Timber Drop, created by S&S Power, was the steepest in the world when it opened on July 2, 2011, but it lost the record with the opening on July 16, 2011, of Takabisha at Fuji-Q Highland in Japan. S&S – Sansei Technologies (formerly S&S Sports, S&S Power, and S&S Worldwide) is an American company known for its pneumatically powered amusement rides and roller coaster designing. History Stan Checketts with his wife Sandy (Stan & Sandy) founded S&S Sports, Inc in 1994 in Logan, Utah. S&S Sports manufactured bungee jumping and trampoline equipment. Steel Hawg is an orange and black roller coaster located at Indiana Beach, Monticello, Indiana. The ride is the first ''El Loco'' model built by manufacturer S&S Worldwide (now S&S – Sansei Technologies) of Logan, Utah. The ride was installed by Ride Entertainment Group. Steel Hawg was expected to open in mid May, but was rescheduled for an early July opening. Steel Hawg opened to the public on July 5, 2008. The ride contains a 111 degree drop, two inversions, and several twists and turns. It also includes the world's first "outside" turn, meaning you bank to the left and turn right, or vice versa. Whilst it was originally planned that Steel Hawg would have a 120° drop, the design was simplified such that the drop is just 111°. Indiana Beach is an amusement park located on Lake Shafer in Monticello, Indiana. The resort was developed by the Spackman family, who owned it from 1926 to 2008. The park was then sold to Morgan RV LLC, Apex Parks Group, LLC, and now is owned and operated by IB Parks & Entertainment. Flamingo Land is a theme park, zoo, and resort located in Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire, England. Opened in 1959, it has been owned and operated by the Gibb family since 1978.
