Judith Thurman (born 1946) is an American writer, biographer, and critic. She is the recipient of the 1983 National Book Award for Nonfiction for her biography ''Isak Dinesen: The Life of a Storyteller''. Her book ''Secrets of the Flesh: A Life of Colette'' was a finalist for the 1999 nonfiction National Book Award. In 2016, she received the medal of Chevalier of the ''Order of Arts and Letters''. Scotty Thurman (born November 10, 1974) is an American former professional basketball player and current assistant coach, perhaps best known as the Arkansas Razorbacks' shooting guard who hit the high-arcing go-ahead three-pointer with 50.7 seconds left in the 1994 NCAA basketball championship game, helping to secure Arkansas' only national title to date in a 76–72 victory over the Duke Blue Devils. John Royster "Roy" Thurman III (April 11, 1924 – May 29, 2004) was a United States Army lieutenant general. Early life and education Thurman was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1924 but moved to High Point, North Carolina in 1928. He graduated from High Point Central High School in 1941 and then enrolled at North Carolina State College. After the outbreak of World War II, Thurman enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces in 1942. Appointed to the United States Military Academy, he graduated in June 1946. Robert Alexander Farrar Thurman (born August 3, 1941) is an American Buddhist author and academic who has written, edited, and translated several books on Tibetan Buddhism. He was the Je Tsongkhapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University, before retiring in June 2019. He was the first endowed chair in Buddhist Studies in the West. Odell Lamar Thurman (born July 9, 1983) is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs and was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft. Lucy Thurman (October 22, 1849 – March 29, 1918) was a national temperance lecturer from Jackson, Michigan. Biography Lucinda "Lucy" Smith was born on October 22, 1849, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada to Nehemiah Henry Smith and Katherine Campbell. In 1866, she left home at 17 when she met Frederick Douglass and Dr. William Wells Brown in Rochester, New York. With their help, she began teaching at a school in Maryland. She moved to Jackson, Michigan in 1869 and married Henry William Simpson. She remarried after Simpson's death to Frank Thurman in 1883.
