Thomas Sutherland (banker)
Sir Thomas Sutherland, (, 16 August 1834 – 1 January 1922) was a Scottish banker and politician, initially elected to represent the Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party and then as a Liberal Unionist Party, Liberal Unionist. He founded HSBC and was a director of P&O. Early life Sutherland was the son of Robert Sutherland and Christian Webster of Aberdeen. He was educated at the University of Aberdeen. Career Sutherland got his start clerking in the London office of P&O. Soon after, P&O promoted Sutherland to superintendent, assigning him to British Hong Kong to manage the firm's Asian operation. In 1863, he became the first chairman of the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock. In order to help finance the burgeoning trade between China and Europe, and explore the potential for China—United States trade, Sutherland established HSBC in 1865 and became its first vice-chairman. Thomas Sutherland (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Douglas Sutherland (1892 - 1946) was a British Army officer of the First and Second world wars. Having been brought up in Orkney, Sutherland emigrated to Ceylon as a young man, where he enlisted in the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps. On 25 November 1915 he was granted a commission and became a second lieutenant in the newly formed 6th (Service) Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. He first saw action with his unit in the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. He received the Military Cross during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 for successfully retrieving the body of his commanding officer from no man's land and assuming command of his company. Sutherland was wounded during the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917, but by August was in command of 'B' Company of his battalion. Sutherland made his debut in first-class cricket for Hampshire against Warwickshire at Southampton in the 1898 County Championship.
