Johannes Thienemann
Johannes Wilhelm Thienemann (12 November 1863 – 12 April 1938) was a German ornithology, ornithologist and pastor who established the Rossitten Bird Observatory, the world's first dedicated bird ringing station where he conducted research and popularized bird study. Biography Thienemann was born in Gangloffsömmern, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Prussian Province of Saxony. His mother was Anna Zimmer. His father August Wilhelm Thienemann, August Wilhelm and his grandfather Georg August Wilhelm were both clergymen with an interest in ornithology. His grandfather had collaborated with Christian Ludwig Brehm and his father attended the first International Ornithologists' Congress at Vienna in 1884. He went to grammar school at Sonderhausen. August Wilhelm Thienemann (24 April 1830 – 5 November 1884) was a German pastor, ornithologist and conservationist. He was the father of Johannes Wilhelm Thienemann, the pioneer of bird ringing in Germany and the founder of the Rossiten bird observatory. Life and work Thienemann was born on 24 April 1830 in Droyßig where his father Georg August Wilhelm Thienemann (1781–1863) was a pastor who also took an interest in natural history with a circle of friends who included Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780-1857) and Christian Ludwig Brehm (1787-1864). August Thienemann
August Friedrich Thienemann (7 September 1882 in Gotha – 22 April 1960 in Plön) was a German limnologist, zoologist and ecologist. He studied zoology at the University of Greifswald. He was an associate Professor of Hydrobiology at the University of Kiel, and director of the former Hydrobiologische Anstalt der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft (now the Max-Planck-Institut für Limnologie) at Plön. A co-founder of Societas Internationalis Limnologiae, Thienemann is best known for his work on the biology of the Chironomidae, and his contributions to the field of lake typology. He also introduced the concept of trophic level terminology in 1920. Ludwig Thienemann
Friedrich August Ludwig Thienemann ( 25 December 1793, Freyburg – 24 June 1858, Dresden) was a German physician and naturalist. Ludwig Thienemann was the son of Johann August Thienemann (1749–1812) and Johanne Eleonora Friederike née Schreiber (1757–1809). He graduated as a doctor in 1819 and then travelled in Europe for two years, spending thirteen months in Iceland. He published a report on his travel in 1824–1827. In 1822, he moved to Leipzig, where he taught zoology in the university and he became curator the natural history collections in Dresden (Kustos Naturalien- sammlungen now in Staatliches Museum für Tierkunde Dresden) in 1825. He was the founder of the ornithological newspaper ''Rhea'', whose two numbers appeared in 1846 and in 1849. He is best remembered for his work in ornithology, in particular research involving avian reproduction. During his career, he amassed a collection of 2000 bird nests and 5000 eggs from 1200 species.
