August Wilhelm Thienemann
August Wilhelm Thienemann (24 April 1830 – 5 November 1884) was a German pastor, ornithologist and conservationist. He was the father of Johannes Wilhelm Thienemann, the pioneer of bird ringing in Germany and the founder of the Rossiten bird observatory. Life and work Thienemann was born on 24 April 1830 in Droyßig where his father Georg August Wilhelm Thienemann (1781–1863) was a pastor who also took an interest in natural history with a circle of friends who included Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780-1857) and Christian Ludwig Brehm (1787-1864). Johannes Wilhelm Thienemann (12 November 1863 – 12 April 1938) was a German ornithology, ornithologist and pastor who established the Rossitten Bird Observatory, the world's first dedicated bird ringing station where he conducted research and popularized bird study. Biography Thienemann was born in Gangloffsömmern, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Prussian Province of Saxony. His mother was Anna Zimmer. His father August Wilhelm Thienemann, August Wilhelm and his grandfather Georg August Wilhelm were both clergymen with an interest in ornithology. His grandfather had collaborated with Christian Ludwig Brehm and his father attended the first International Ornithologists' Congress at Vienna in 1884. He went to grammar school at Sonderhausen. Johann Friedrich Naumann (14 February 1780 – 15 August 1857) was a German scientist, engraver, and editor. He is regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Europe. He published ''The Natural History of German Birds'' (1820–1844) and ''The Eggs of German Birds'' (1818–1828). His father Johann Andreas Naumann (1744–1826) was a naturalist, and his brother Georg Amadeus Carl Friedrich Naumann, Carl Andreas Naumann (1786–1854) was also an ornithologist. The German ornithological society named its journal ''Naumannia''. The lesser kestrel (''Falco naumanni'') is also named for him. Christian Ludwig Brehm
Christian Ludwig Brehm (24 January 1787 – 23 June 1864) was a German pastor and Ornithology, ornithologist. He was the father of the Zoology, zoologist Alfred Brehm. Life Brehm was born in Schönau (Odenwald), Schönau near Gotha on 24 January 1787. He was educated at University of Jena to be ordained as minister at Renthendorf in 1813 where he remained until his death on 23 June 1864. He wrote ''Beiträge zur Vogelkunde'' (1820–22), which described 104 species of German birds in minute detail, and ''Handbuch der Naturgeschichte aller Vögel Deutschlands'' (1831) which described 900 bird species. Brehm accumulated a collection of 15,000 birds until his death, which included samples from his son, Alfred Brehm. Alfred collected these birds from Sudan, Egypt, and throughout Europe. He offered these to the Natural History Museum, Berlin, Berlin Zoological Museum in March 1835 because he feared that a storm would destroy his house, but the sale fell through. After his death, ...
