Thea Hillman
Thea Hillman (born 1971) is an American intersex activist, poetry slam performer, and writer. Hillman was an early advocate for intersex rights in the United States and served as chair of the Intersex Society of North America board from 2002 to 2005. Her 2008 book, ''Intersex (For Lack of a Better Word)'', won the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Literature. Early life and education Thea Hillman was born in San Francisco, California, on January 17, 1971. She was born with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) which was treated with hormone therapy. It wasn't until age 28 that she came to the realization that CAH was an intersex condition, and she began considering her identity as an intersex person. Hillman endured invasive medical inspection of her body as a child, but also describes herself as "lucky" to have had parents who talked with her about her body, and not to have had medically unnecessary surgeries like many other intersex children. Carol Queen (born 1957) is an American feminist author, editor, and sexologist active in the sex-positive feminism movement. Queen is a two time Grand Marshal of San Francisco LGBTQ Pride. Queen has written on human sexuality in books such as ''Real Live Nude Girl: Chronicles of Sex-Positive Culture''. She has written a sex tutorial, ''Exhibitionism for the Shy: Show Off, Dress Up and Talk Hot'', as well as erotica, such as the novel ''The Leather Daddy and the Femme''. Intersex people are those born with any of several sex characteristics, including chromosome patterns, gonads, or genitals that, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, "do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies". Sex assignment at birth usually aligns with a child's external genitalia. The number of births with ambiguous genitals is in the range of 1:4,500–1:2,000 (0.02%–0.05%). Traditional Values Coalition
The Traditional Values Coalition (TVC) was an American conservative Christian organization. It was founded in 1980 at Anaheim California by Rev. Louis P. Sheldon to oppose LGBT rights. Sheldon's daughter, Andrea Sheldon Lafferty, was initially the executive director and presently (since 2011) serves as president. TVC was influential in the 1980s and 1990s in lobbying for government policy based in Christian fundamentalism. TVC was designated an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), citing TVC's use of "known falsehoods—claims about LGBT people that have been thoroughly discredited by scientific authorities—and repeated, groundless name-calling." Hermaphroditus
In Greek mythology, Hermaphroditus (; , ) was a child of Aphrodite and Hermes. According to Ovid, he was born a remarkably beautiful boy whom the naiad Salmacis attempted to rape and prayed to be united with forever. A god, in answer to her prayer, merged their two forms into one and transformed him into a hermaphrodite. His name is compounded of his parents' names, Hermes and Aphrodite. Because Hermaphroditus was a child of Hermes, and consequently a great-grandchild of Atlas (Hermes's mother Maia was the daughter of Atlas), he is sometimes called Atlantiades (). Symbolism Hermaphroditus, the two-sexed child of Aphrodite and Hermes (Venus and Mercury), had long been a symbol of androgyny or effeminacy, and was portrayed in Greco-Roman art as a female figure with male genitals. Jeffrey Kent Eugenides (born March 8, 1960) is an American author. He has written numerous short stories and essays, as well as three novels: '' The Virgin Suicides'' (1993), ''Middlesex'' (2002), and '' The Marriage Plot'' (2011).
