Mark Speer (born November 9, 1979) is an American musician and songwriter, best known as the guitarist and one of the founding members of the musical trio Khruangbin. Biography Mark Speer was born November 9, 1979, in Houston, Texas. The first music video he remembers seeing on MTV is Grandmaster Flash’s "The Message (Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five song), The Message", the production of which he found intriguing. One of the first concerts he attended as a child was that of Parliament-Funkadelic. Speer initially wanted to play drums but could not afford them, so he started playing bass guitar. Later, he borrowed a four-track cassette recorder from a friend of his dad, and was making tracks with Casio drums by playing them with his fingers. He wanted to put chords on them, so he borrowed a guitar from a friend and started learning jazz fusion chords. Laura Lee Ochoa (born October 14, 1986) is an American musician and singer-songwriter. She is the bass guitarist and one of the founding members of musical trio Khruangbin. Biography The daughter of Mexican-American parents, Ochoa played piano and guitar as a child, but picked up bass at the suggestion of future bandmate Mark Speer. Ochoa met Speer in 2007 through friends, where they initially connected over a shared love of Afghan music. Ochoa was an art history major with a focus on art of the ancient Near East. She worked as a math teacher for six years. At the time, Ochoa was interested in playing piano again and Speer suggested she "follow the sound of the bass," which reframed her approach. This recommendation led her to begin playing bass guitar in 2009, which she says came very naturally to her. Donald "DJ" Johnson
Donald "DJ" Johnson, Jr. is an American musician, songwriter, and music producer best known as the drummer for Khruangbin, a trio from Houston, Texas, and one half of the hip hop production duo Beanz N Kornbread. Background Johnson grew up playing drums, moving to keyboard organ in his late teens. He has remarked on the cultural diversity of growing up in Houston, with people from all over the world living in the region and playing their music, as influencing his sound. Johnson is an alumnus of Texas All State Symphonic Wind Ensemble and studied orchestral percussion with instructor Jim Whitfill. Johnson met guitarist and future Khruangbin bandmate Mark Speer in 2004 at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe in Houston. The two later worked together as hired players in Pastor Rudy Rasmus' St. John's United Methodist Church gospel band in the city, where Johnson played organ and Speer played guitar.
