The Purge
''The Purge'' is an American anthology media franchise centered on a series of dystopian action horror films distributed by Universal Pictures and produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes, which are written and in some cases also directed by James DeMonaco, who was inspired by a '' Star Trek: The Original Series'' episode, " The Return of the Archons". The films present a seemingly normal, crime-free America in the near future. However, the country is a dystopia which observes an annual event known as "the Purge", in which all crime, including murder, is legal for a 12-hour period. The franchise began in 2013 with '' The Purge'', directed by creator DeMonaco, who also directed two of the sequels and wrote the screenplays for all films in the series. The Purge (2013 Film)
''The Purge'' is a 2013 American dystopian action horror film written and directed by James DeMonaco. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder as members of a wealthy family who find themselves endangered by a gang of murderers during the annual Purge, a night during which all crime, including murder, is temporarily legal. ''The Purge'' premiered at the Stanley Film Festival on May 2, 2013, and Universal Pictures theatrically released it in the United States on June 7, 2013. The film grossed $91 million against a $3 million budget. It is the first installment in the ''Purge'' franchise. A sequel, subtitled ''Anarchy'', was released worldwide on July 18, 2014. James DeMonaco
James DeMonaco (born October 12, 1969) is an American filmmaker. He is best known for creating the The Purge, ''Purge'' franchise, writing all five films in the series and directing the first three, ''The Purge (2013 film), The Purge'' (2013), ''The Purge: Anarchy, Anarchy'' (2014), and ''The Purge: Election Year, Election Year'' (2016). DeMonaco's first produced screenplay was the Robin Williams comedy ''Jack (1996 film), Jack'' (1996), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Personal life DeMonaco grew up in Staten Island, New York. He spent eight years in Paris, France, that led him to "put a microscope" on his life after seeing the difference in the relationship toward guns and violence in Paris compared to New York. DeMonaco is of Italian descent. He and his wife, a doctor, were almost killed by a drunk driver in Brooklyn. Anthony Michael Oller (born February 25, 1991) is an American actor and singer. He had roles as Walt Moore on the TeenNick TV show '' Gigantic'', and as Danny on Disney Channel's '' As the Bell Rings''. He appeared in the films '' Beneath the Darkness'' and '' The Purge''.
