''The Mercian Sphere'' is the second studio album by the English black metal band Winterfylleth, released on 12 July 2010 through Candlelight Records. It was made after Winterfylleth regrouped in 2009 and was the band's first collaboration with Candlelight Records. It contains Anglo-Saxon lyrical subjects and influences from folk music. Background The black metal band Winterfylleth formed in Manchester in 2007 by the drummer Simon Lucas and vocalist and guitarist Chris Naughton. The band released its debut album '' The Ghost of Heritage'' through Profound Lore Records in 2008. Between the first and second album, the band replaced its bass guitarist, who attracted attention from antifascists for posts on his Myspace page where he used the phrases "wpww"—short for "White Pride World Wide"—and "14w"—referring to the Fourteen Words slogan of the American neo-Nazi David Lane. Winterfylleth is an English black metal band from Manchester. Since their inception in 2006, the band has released seven studio albums and have become a popular act in both the English underground metal scene and the wider international metal arena. Winterfylleth are self-described as "English Heritage Black Metal" and are often considered to be musical 'brothers-in-arms' with fellow English black metal band Wodensthrone owing to the common lyrical and aesthetic themes they share. The Wanderer (Old English Poem)
''The Wanderer'' is an Old English poem preserved only in an anthology known as the Exeter Book. It comprises 115 lines of alliterative verse. As is often the case with Anglo-Saxon verse, the composer and compiler are anonymous, and within the manuscript the poem is untitled. Origins The date of the poem is impossible to determine, but scholarly consensus considers it to be older than the Exeter Book itself, which dates from the late 10th century. The inclusion of a number of Norse-influenced words, such as the compound ''hrimceald'' (ice-cold, from the Old Norse word ''hrimkaldr''), and some unusual spelling forms, has encouraged others to date the poem to the late 9th or early 10th century. As is typical of Old English verse, the metre of the poem is alliterative and consists of four-stress lines, divided between the second and third stresses by a caesura. Mercia
Mercia (, was one of the principal kingdoms founded at the end of Sub-Roman Britain; the area was settled by Anglo-Saxons in an era called the Heptarchy. It was centred on the River Trent and its tributaries, in a region now known as the Midlands of England. The royal court moved around the kingdom without a fixed capital city. Folk metal is a fusion genre of heavy metal music and traditional folk music that developed in Europe during the 1990s.
