''The Early Bird Dood It!'' is a 1942 MGM cartoon directed by Tex Avery and produced by Fred Quimby. The composer of this cartoon was Scott Bradley. Plot The cartoon opens with the printed words: To the ladies The worm in this photoplay is fictitious - Any similarity between this worm and your husband is purely intentional. The camera pans over a forest, shown with no accompanying background music. There is a sign that reads: "Quiet, isn't it?" Then, the camera zooms to a hole in the ground, from which emerges a worm (who eventually is revealed to be a caricature of Lou Costello) wearing a bowler hat. The worm sees a bird in the distance and races back into his hole. The bird, uttering threats, sticks his beak in and ends up with a handkerchief tied around it. The bird writes a zero, the third of the week, in his "worm ration card" book. The bird says that he will see us "tomorrow morning" and strides off. Tex Avery
Frederick Bean "Tex" Avery (February 26, 1908 – August 26, 1980) was an American animator, cartoonist, director, and voice actor. He was known for directing and producing animated cartoons during the golden age of American animation. His most significant work was for the Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios, where he was crucial in the creation and evolution of famous animated characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Droopy, Screwy Squirrel, The Wolf, Red Hot Riding Hood, and George and Junior. He gained influence for his technical innovation, directorial style and brand of humor. Avery's attitude toward animation was opposite that of Walt Disney and other conventional family cartoons at the time. ''Fair and Worm-er'' is a 1946 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' cartoon directed by Chuck Jones. The short was released on September 28, 1946. The title is a pun on ''Fair and Warmer''. The premise greatly resembles and builds upon that of the 1942 Tex Avery cartoon, ''The Early Bird Dood It!'', which is about a worm chased by a bird chased by a cat, and has a much darker ending. Plot A worm, wielding a knife and fork, rushes to dine on a large apple that has fallen to the ground when he is immediately chased by a hungry black crow. The crow pursues the worm until he is confronted by an equally hungry cat. The cat runs after the crow, only to find itself in the sights of a vicious, equally hungry dog. The dog harasses the cat until he is suddenly set upon by the local dog catcher. He is stopped in his tracks by his wife (armed with a rolling pin), who professes that she is not "scared of man nor beast."
