The Boo Radleys
The Boo Radleys are an English alternative rock band who were associated with the shoegazing and Britpop movements in the 1990s. They originally formed in Wallasey, England, in 1988, with singer/guitarist Simon "Sice" Rowbottom, guitarist/songwriter Martin Carr, and bassist Tim Brown. Their name is taken from the character Boo Radley in Harper Lee's 1960 novel, ''To Kill a Mockingbird''. The band split up in 1999. In their 11-year-long career, the band had one top-ten single, 1995's " Wake Up Boo!", which charted at no. 9, and a number-one album, '' Wake Up!''. The band reunited in 2021, without Carr, and released a single, "A Full Syringe and Memories of You", their first new music since 1998. Paul Banks of Interpol has cited the band as an influence. Wallasey () is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, England. It is at the mouth of the River Mersey, on the north-eastern corner of the Wirral Peninsula. ''Giant Steps'' is the third studio album by the Boo Radleys, released in 1993. The title is inspired by John Coltrane's album of the same name, and the record features an assortment of influences — their previous shoegazing sound backed by pop, reggae, noise pop and orchestral sounds. ''Everything's Alright Forever'' is the second album by English indie rock band the Boo Radleys, released in 1992. The title is taken from '' The Dharma Bums'' by Jack Kerouac. Background The Boo Radleys released their debut studio album '' Ichabod and I'' in 1990. After recording a session for the BBC in July 1990, Rob Cieka replaced drummer Steve Hewitt. By November 1990, they had signed to Rough Trade Records, with whom they issued the ''Kaleidoscope'', ''Every Heaven'' and ''Boo Up!'' EPs, which became minor hits on the UK Independent Albums Chart. Placebo ( ) are a British alternative rock band, formed in London in 1994 by vocalist–guitarist Brian Molko and bassist–guitarist Stefan Olsdal, and in late 1994 Robert Schultzberg joined as drummer. Molko was born in Belgium and Olsdal and Schultzberg in Sweden; Molko and Olsdal grew up in Luxembourg before separately relocating to London and becoming British citizens. Ichabod ( ''ʾĪḵāḇōḏ'', "without glory", or "where is the glory?") is mentioned in the first Book of Samuel as the son of Phinehas, a priest at the biblical shrine of Shiloh, who was born on the day that the Israelites' Ark of God was taken into Philistine captivity. His mother went into labour due to the shock of hearing that her husband and Eli, her father-in-law, had died and that the Ark had been captured. He is also named later as the brother of Ahitub. Etymology The First Book of Samuel () tells how Ichabod's mother named him because ''the glory has departed from Israel'', because of the loss of the Ark to the Philistines, and perhaps also because of the deaths of Eli and Phinehas. She repeats the phrase "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured", to show her piety, and to express that the public and spiritual loss lay heavier upon her spirit than her personal or domestic calamity.
