The Awful Truth (band)
The Awful Truth were a progressive metal band from the late 1980s based in Houston, Texas, United States. They were a three piece group consisting of lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist David Von Ohlerking, bassist and vocalist Monty Colvin, and drummer and vocalist Alan Doss. They released one album, the eponymously titled ''The Awful Truth''. After the band split, Colvin and Doss formed the Galactic Cowboys. Ohlerking went on to front a number of bands including In The Garden, From Now On, and more. According to producer/manager Sam Taylor, Ohlerking named the band after the old 1937 movie of the same name. According to Colvin, Metal Blade Records signed the band after they had already broken up. Metal Blade Records took a number of the band's demos, mastered them and released them as what would then be The Awful Truth's one and only full-length album. Progressive Metal
Progressive metal (sometimes shortened to prog metal) is a broad fusion music genre melding heavy metal and progressive rock, combining the loud "aggression" and amplified guitar-driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter. One of these experimental examples introduced to modern metal was djent. The music typically showcases the extreme technical proficiency of the performers and usually uses unorthodox harmonies as well as complex rhythms with frequent meter changes and intense syncopation. While the genre emerged towards the late-1980s, it was not until the 1990s that progressive metal achieved widespread success. Galactic Cowboys
Galactic Cowboys are an American heavy metal band based in Houston, Texas. They combine progressive metal with a vocal style influenced by The Beatles and the heavy playing style of thrash bands such as Anthrax. They have been described as "possibly the most melodic metal band ever to exist in Christian or general markets." Although the band members are Christians, they did not consider Galactic Cowboys to be a Christian band. The band has toured with prominent hard rock and metal acts such as Anthrax, Dream Theater, King's X and Overkill. Despite their general lack of commercial success, the band has garnered a cult following throughout its existence. Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. Enigma Records (also known as Enigma Entertainment Corporation) was a popular rock and alternative American record label in the 1980s. History Enigma Records launched as a division of Greenworld Distribution, an independent music importer/distributor, in 1981. Four years later, in 1985, Enigma severed ties with Greenworld and became its own company. Metal Blade Records is an American independent record label founded by Brian Slagel in 1982. The US office for Metal Blade is located in Agoura Hills, California.
