The Adventurer (magazine)
''The Adventurer'' was a game magazine published by LucasArts from Fall 1990 to Winter 1996. Designed as a consumer-facing company newsletter, it promoted upcoming LucasArts releases and featured background information on their development in the form of essays and staff interviews. In addition to printed copies which were distributed free of charge, LucasArts also published selected articles on their website. Despite the magazine's name, ''The Adventurer'' did not focus exclusively on adventure games, but covered all kinds of titles published by LucasArts. Issues Over the course of the magazine's 6-year run, a total of 13 issues were released. Due to issue number 13 being skipped, the magazine's final issue was #14, published at the end of 1996. ''Outlaws'' is a first-person shooter developed and published by LucasArts on April 7, 1997. Set in the Wild West, it follows retired U.S. Marshal James Anderson, who seeks to bring justice to a gang of criminals who killed his wife and kidnapped his daughter. It uses an enhanced version of the Jedi game engine, first seen in '' Star Wars: Dark Forces''. It is also largely credited as the first shooter game with a sniper zoom, as well as one of the first to feature a gun reloading mechanic. LucasArts' INSANE animation engine was used to render computer graphics animation sequences. These have special filters to look hand-drawn, and play between each mission and set up the action in the next area. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics. ''Afterlife'' is a god game released by LucasArts in June 1996 that places the player in the role of a semi-omnipotent being known as a Demiurge, with the job of creating a functional Heaven and Hell to reward or punish the citizens of the local planet. The player does not assign citizens to their various punishments and rewards since the game does this automatically. Instead, the player creates the infrastructure (roads, zones for the various sins/virtues, reincarnation centers) that allows the afterlife to function properly. Players are accountable for the job that they do because of their bosses, The Powers That Be, check in from time to time. The player also has the assistance of two advisors—Aria Goodhalo, an angel, and Jasper Wormsworth, a demon. Aria and Jasper provide warnings when things are going wrong with the afterlife, and offer tips on how to fix the problems.
