The 1st Singles Box
''The 1st Singles Box'' is a box set compilation of singles recorded by the Who throughout their history. The album was released exclusively in the United Kingdom on 25 May 2004. It was considered the counterpart to the other compilation album by the Who, entitled Then and Now. The album was set with twelve compact discs containing two songs each, a la the A-side and B-side of the original single. Each individual CD was encased by a paper sleeve representing the single's original artwork from a particular country. The Who
The Who are an English Rock music, rock band formed in London in 1964. Their classic lineup (1964–1978) consisted of lead vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. Considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, their contributions to rock music include the development of the Marshall Stack, Marshall stack, large public address systems, the use of synthesizers, Entwistle's and Moon's influential playing styles, Townshend's Guitar feedback, feedback and power chord guitar technique, and the development of the rock opera. Shout And Shimmy
"Shout and Shimmy" is an R&B song written by James Brown, and recorded by him and The Famous Flames. It rose to #16 on the R&B chart and #61 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Background The critic Douglas Wolk described the song as "a truly shameless ripoff of The Isley Brothers' 1959 hit " Shout"... basically the fast parts of "Shout" with the gospel inflections removed and the word 'shimmy' added." Wolk argues that Brown and The Famous Flames probably performed "Shout and Shimmy" in the October 24, 1962 concerts at which '' Live at the Apollo'' was recorded, but that it was left off of the album to prevent sales competition with the studio version of the song. Luigi Creatore
Luigi Federico Creatore (December 21, 1921 – December 13, 2015) was an American songwriter and record producer. Creatore was born in New York City in 1921, the son of noted Italian-born bandleader and composer Giuseppe Creatore. After serving with the United States military during World War II, in the 1950s he became a writer then partnered with his cousin, Hugo Peretti to form the songwriting team of Hugo & Luigi which also produced other records. In 1957, they bought into Roulette Records where they both wrote songs for various artists such as Valerie Carr and produced major hits for Jimmie Rodgers including "Honeycomb" (Billboard #1) and " Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" (Billboard #3), and " Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again" and " Secretly". "Real Good Looking Boy" is a song written by Pete Townshend, the guitarist of the English rock band The Who. It was originally released in 2004 on the compilation album '' Then and Now'', and was one of two new songs on that album, the other being "Old Red Wine". Who Are You (The Who Song)
"Who Are You" is the title track on the Who's eighth studio album, ''Who Are You'' (1978), the last album released by the band before Keith Moon's death in September 1978. It was written by Pete Townshend and released as a double A-side single with the John Entwistle composition " Had Enough", also featured on the album. The song was one of the band's biggest hits in North America, peaking at number 7 in Canada and at number 14 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and has become one of the band's signature songs at their live shows. "Won't Get Fooled Again" is a song by the English rock band the Who, written by guitarist and primary songwriter Pete Townshend. It was released as a single in June 1971, reaching the top 10 in the UK, while the full eight-and-a-half-minute version appears as the final track on the band's 1971 album ''Who's Next'', released that August. "Pinball Wizard" is a song by the English rock band the Who, written by guitarist and primary songwriter Pete Townshend and featured on their 1969 rock opera album '' Tommy''. I Can See For Miles
"I Can See for Miles" is a song by the English rock band the Who, recorded for the band's 1967 album '' The Who Sell Out''. Written by guitarist Pete Townshend, it was the only song from the album to be released as a single. Composition "I Can See For Miles" was first written and demoed in the spring of 1966, around the time of Shel Talmy's legal case against the Who; Townshend claims to have first written the lyric on the back of his affidavit in the case, with lyrics inspired by the jealousy he felt toward his girlfriend Karen when he saw her with other men. Townshend was so excited by the demo, which he considered his best song up to that point, that he decided to save it for a time when the group would really need a smash hit. "Pictures of Lily" is a single by the British rock band the Who, written by guitarist and primary songwriter Pete Townshend. In 1971, "Pictures of Lily" was included in the Who album ''Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy'', a compilation of previously released singles. Townshend coined the term "power pop" when he used it to describe the song in a May 1967 interview with ''NME''. Synopsis In the beginning of the song, the singer laments his inability to sleep. When his father gives him the pictures of the song's titular Lily, he feels better, and is able to sleep. Soon, he feels desire for Lily as a person instead of a photo, and asks his father for an introduction. His father informs him however that "Lily" has, in fact, been dead since 1929. "Happy Jack" is a song by the British rock band the Who. It was released as a single in December 1966 in the United Kingdom, peaking at No. 3 in the charts. It peaked at No. 1 in Canada. It was also their first top 40 hit in the United States, where it was released in March 1967 and peaked at No. 24. It was included on the American version of their second album, ''Happy Jack'', originally titled ''A Quick One'' in the UK. Keith Moon
Keith John Moon (23 August 1946 – 7 September 1978) was an English musician who was the drummer for the rock band the Who. Regarded as one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music, he was noted for his unique style of playing and his eccentric, often self-destructive behaviour. Moon grew up in Wembley and took up the drums during the early 1960s. After playing with a local band, the Beachcombers, he joined the Who in 1964 before they recorded their first single. John Entwistle
John Alec Entwistle (9 October 194427 June 2002) was an English musician, best known as the bass guitarist for the rock band the Who. Entwistle's music career spanned over four decades. Nicknamed "The Ox" and "Thunderfingers", he was the band's only member with formal musical training and also provided backing and occasional lead vocals. Entwistle was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Who in 1990.
