Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC)
The Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC) is a three-day jazz music event initiated in 2009 by the College of Music, Mahidol University, aimed at presenting top-quality jazz music to the public and offering jazz education to interested musicians (both students and the general public). TIJC is held in the university venue and consists of three main elements, i.e., music performance, Jazz Education Activities, TIJC Solo Competition, and TIJC Jazz Band Competition, which are open for general professional jazz musicians. Background Currently, the jazz music scene in Thailand has seen continuous growth. The number of listeners, musicians, and composers interested in jazz music is expanding. College Of Music, Mahidol University
The College of Music, Mahidol University or Wittayalaiduliyangkasilp (; literally: College of Orchestra Art) is a music school in Phutthamonthon, Nakhon Pathom (in the western suburbs of Bangkok, Thailand). The College of Music is a faculty within Mahidol University. It was established in 1994 by Mahidol University under the leadership of , the first music school in Thailand. Today, there are more than 1,300 students enrolled in the precollege, undergraduate, and graduate levels of the College of Music (approximately 300 precollege, 750 undergraduates and 250 graduate students). Students come from throughout Thailand, and approximately 5% of students are from other countries, primarily Southeast Asia. Alfredo Rodríguez (pianist, Born 1985)
Alfredo Rodríguez Salicio (born October 7, 1985) is a Cuban composer and jazz pianist. Alfredo Rodríguez is the older of two sons of Alfredo "Alfredito" Rodríguez, a professional singer, romantic song composer and television presenter and Mayra Salicio. He studied classical piano at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory, then at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory of Music and at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. Rodríguez's interest in jazz was stimulated by the annual "JoJazz" competition for young jazz musicians, where he won an honorable mention in 2003. In 2006, Rodríguez was selected as one of twelve pianists from around the world to play at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. It was there that he met the late music icon Quincy Jones, who then became both his producer and a mentor. Peter Bernstein (guitarist)
Peter Andrew Bernstein (born September 3, 1967) is an American jazz guitarist. Biography Born in New York City on September 3, 1967, Bernstein began playing piano when he was eight but switched to guitar when he was thirteen, learning the instrument primarily by ear. He studied jazz at Rutgers University with Ted Dunbar, and Kenny Barron. While a student at the New School in New York City, he met guitarist Jim Hall, who offered him a job performing at the JVC Jazz Festival in 1990. He then appeared on albums with Jesse Davis, Lou Donaldson, Larry Goldings, Michael Hashim, Geoff Keezer, and Melvin Rhyne. He released his first album as a leader with pianist Brad Mehldau. Kenny Werner
Kenny Werner (born November 19, 1951) is an American jazz pianist, composer, and author. Early life Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 19, 1951, and then growing up in Oceanside, Long Island, Werner began playing and performing at a young age, first appearing on television at the age of 11. Although he studied classical piano as a child, he enjoyed playing anything he heard on the radio and improvisation was his true calling. In high school and his first years of college he attended the Manhattan School of Music as a classical piano major. His aptitude for improvisation led him to the Berklee College of Music in 1970, where he met and studied with his first piano/spiritual teacher, Madame Chaloff. Edgar Gómez (born October 4, 1944) is a Puerto Rican jazz double bassist, known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio from 1966 to 1977. Aaron Parks
Aaron Parks (born October 7, 1983) is an American jazz pianist. Career A native of Seattle, Parks studied at the University of Washington at the age of 14 through the Transition School and Early Entrance Program as a double major in computer science and music. At 15, he was selected to participate in the Grammy High School Jazz Ensembles which inspired him to move to New York City and transfer to the Manhattan School of Music. At Manhattan one of his teachers was Kenny Barron. During his final year, he began touring with Terence Blanchard's band, recording three albums with them for Blue Note, including the Grammy-winning A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina). Seamus Blake
Seamus Blake (born December 8, 1970) is a British-born Canadian tenor saxophonist. Early life and education Blake was born in London, England and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His mother introduced him to jazz when he was a child and he later attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Career Upon graduation, he moved to New York City. In February 2002, he won the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. He currently plays with his own quintet (featuring David Kikoski, Lage Lund, Bill Stewart, and Matt Clohesy) and has been a regular with the Mingus Big Band as well as many other New York musicians. Jeff "Tain" Watts (born January 20, 1960) is an American jazz drummer who has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Betty Carter, Michael Brecker, Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane, and others. Biography Watts got the nickname "Tain" from Kenny Kirkland when they were on tour in Florida and drove past a Chieftain gas station. Lage Lund
Lage Fosheim Lund (born 12 December 1977) is a Norwegian jazz guitarist who lives in New York. Early life and education Initially aspiring to become a professional skateboarder, Lund began playing guitar at the age of 13. He later founded a jazz trio and performing in local clubs. Lund earned a scholarship he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he regularly performed at Wally's Cafe. In 2002, Lund was the recipient of a Fulbright Foundation grant, which gave him the opportunity to move to New York City. In 2003, he entered the Juilliard School scholarship jazz program and graduated in 2005. He won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2005. George Garzone
George Garzone (born September 23, 1950) is a saxophonist and jazz educator from Boston, Massachusetts. Biography Garzone is a member of the Fringe, a jazz trio founded in 1972 that includes bassist John Lockwood and drummer Francisco Mela, who fills the drum chair occupied for over 50 years by the late Bob Gullotti. The group has released several albums. Garzone has appeared on over 20 recordings. He began on tenor saxophone when he was six, played in a family band, and attended music school in Boston. He toured Europe with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and performed with Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, John Patitucci, Danilo Pérez, Rachel Z, and Bob Weir and Ratdog. Peter Martin (born 1970) is an American jazz pianist. Life and career Martin was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 17, 1970. He won Second Place at the 1993 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Producer Carl Griffin brought Martin together with saxophonist Ron Blake, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson to form the band 4-Sight, which released one eponymous album for N2K Encoded Music in 1998.
