Texas Longhorns
The Texas Longhorns are the athletic teams representing the University of Texas at Austin. The teams are sometimes referred to as the Horns and take their name from Longhorn cattle that were an important part of the development of Texas, and are now the official "large animal" of the state of Texas. Generally, both the men's and women's teams are referred to as the Longhorns, and the mascot is a Texas Longhorn steer named Bevo. The Longhorns have consistently been ranked as the biggest brand in collegiate athletics, in both department size and breadth of appeal. The ''Longhorn'' nickname had begun appearing in Texas newspapers by 1900. The University of Texas at Austin is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball
The Texas Longhorns men's basketball team represents the University of Texas at Austin in NCAA Division I College basketball, intercollegiate men's basketball competition. The Longhorns competed in the Big 12 Conference through the 2023–24 season and moved to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) on July 1, 2024. The University of Texas began Varsity team, varsity intercollegiate competition in men's basketball in 1906. The Texas Longhorns women's basketball team represents the University of Texas at Austin in NCAA Division I College basketball, intercollegiate women's basketball competition. The Longhorns compete in the SEC Conference. Under head coach Jody Conradt, the second National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA Division I basketball coach to win 900 career games (after Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball, Tennessee's Pat Summitt), the Longhorns won the 1986 national championship. Conradt retired after the 2006–07 season, and was replaced by Duke Blue Devils, Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors.
