Tasmania Vs Victoria (1960)
On Monday, 13 June 1960 (Queen's Birthday holiday), the Tasmanian state team hosted a Victorian state team in an interstate Australian rules football match at York Park, Launceston. The Tasmanian team won by seven points, considered one of the biggest interstate football upset victories of all time, and one of the greatest moments in the history of Tasmanian football. It was the first of only two victories by Tasmania against a Victorian Football League or Victorian state of origin team, from a total of 29 matches. A then-record Launceston crowd of 15,600 attended the game. Tasmania played the better football early, and opened a 17 point lead at quarter time. Victoria fought back gradually throughout the day, and hit the front for the first time ten minutes into the final quarter. York Park
York Park is a sports ground in the Inveresk and York Park Precinct, Launceston, Australia. Holding 19,000 people – the largest capacity stadium in Tasmania, York Park is known commercially as University of Tasmania Stadium and was formerly known as Aurora Stadium under a previous naming rights agreement signed with Aurora Energy in 2004. Primarily used for Australian rules football, its record attendance of 20,971 was set in June 2006, when Hawthorn Football Club played Richmond Football Club in an Australian Football League (AFL) match. The area was swampland before becoming Launceston's showgrounds in 1873. In the following decades the grounds were increasingly used for sports, including cricket, bowls and tennis. Athol Webb (born 13 September 1935) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s. A small forward, Webb was a premiership player with Melbourne in 1956 and 1957. Burnie Payne
Burnet 'Burnie' Payne (born 8 May 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Hobart in the Tasmanian National Football League (TANFL) and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He is a member of the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2005. Payne make his TANFL debut at the age of just 16 and was a member of Hobart's 1959, 1960 and 1963 premiership teams. St Kilda then secured his services for the 1964 VFL season and he had a solid year, starting with three goals on debut and he later managed a six-goal haul in a win over South Melbourne. John Fitzallen
John Douglas Fitzallen (13 November 1934 – 11 October 2017) was an Australian rules footballer who played in Tasmania during the 1950s and 1960s. He represented the state several times in interstate matches including the Brisbane Carnival in 1961. He was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2006. The Tasmanian State League (TSL), colloquially known as the "Tasmanian Football League (TFL)" (formerly known as the "Tasmanian Australian National Football League (TANFL)" and several other short-term names) is the highest ranked Australian rules football league in Tasmania, Australia.
