Tapah is a town and the capital of Batang Padang District, Perak, Malaysia.It is one of the two gateway towns to the renowned hill retreat of Cameron Highlands alongside Simpang Pulai, with the latter situated approximately to its north. Tapah is located to the southeast of Ipoh, the state capital city. Name The name "Tapah" is said to be originated from the name of a freshwater fish, ''"Ikan Tapah"''. Federal Route 59, or Jalan Tapah–Cameron Highlands, is a 90 km federal road in Perak and Pahang state, Malaysia. It was the main route to Cameron Highlands, Pahang from Tapah, Perak, before the second route Second East–West Highway was built in 2001. Route background The Kilometre Zero of the Federal Route 59 is located at Tapah, Perak, at its interchange with the Federal Route 1, the main trunk road of the centre of Peninsular Malaysia. Tapah Road
Tapah Road (pop. ~7,000) is a small town in Batang Padang District, Perak, Malaysia. The population consists of 40% Muslim Malays, 30% Chinese, 20% Indians and a few indigenous. History Tapah Road was of greater importance in early to mid-20th century because of its railway station, Tapah Road railway station, which is the second oldest in Malaysia. The station was constructed with a railway to Teluk Intan (Branch Line) in the 1880s. The station was, and still is, linked to the main railway line from Butterworth to Singapore. Tapah Road was considered a major stop because it was the gateway to Cameron Highlands, the cold highland resort which was popular with the British colonial officers. The town became relatively less important in terms of economic activities in the region as road vehicles gained popularity beginning in the 1970s. Batang Padang District
The Batang Padang District () is a district in Perak, Malaysia. This district is administered by a local council, namely, the Tapah District Council, based in Tapah. The major towns of Batang Padang are Bidor, Tapah and Sungkai. In August 2007 the Perak Government announced the discovery of large water aquifers at Batang Padang. They plan to sell the water to neighbouring Selangor to help solve future water shortage problems in that state. Cameron Highlands
The Cameron Highlands () is a district in Pahang, Malaysia, occupying an area of . To the north, its boundary touches that of Kelantan; to the west, it shares part of its border with Perak. Bidor
Bidor (Jawi: بيدور) is a town and mukim in Batang Padang District, southern Perak, Malaysia. Geography Bidor is located 59 km southeast from state capital Ipoh and 116 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur. It is south of Tapah, north of Sungkai, east of Changkat Jong and Teluk Intan, and west of the Titiwangsa Mountains. History Bidor and much of Perak were believed to be part of the Gangga Negara kingdom based on the historical artifacts that were discovered. It is believed that the area accepted Hindu-Buddhism around 900 years ago. ''Wallagonia leerii'', also known as the Tapah and formerly the striped wallago catfish is a species of catfish native to Southeast Asia. Its habitat ranges from the river drainages of Thailand through the Malayan peninsula to the islands of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia. It can grow up to in length and weigh up to . It has been used as food in Southeast Asia since ancient times. Overfishing for its prized meat has caused the population to significantly decrease.
