A warship or combatant ship is a naval ship that is built and primarily intended for naval warfare. Usually they belong to the armed forces of a state. As well as being armed, warships are designed to withstand damage and are usually faster and more maneuverable than merchant ships. Unlike a merchant ship, which carries cargo, a warship typically carries only weapons, ammunition and supplies for its crew. Turkish Navy
The Turkish Naval Forces ( tr, ), or Turkish Navy ( tr, ) is the naval warfare service branch of the Turkish Armed Forces. The modern naval traditions and customs of the Turkish Navy can be traced back to 10 July 1920, when it was established as the ''Directorate of Naval Affairs'' during the Turkish War of Independence led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Since July 1949, the service has been officially known as the ''Turkish Naval Forces''. In 2008, the Turkish Navy had a reported active personnel strength of 48,600; this figure included an Amphibious Marines Brigade as well as several Special Forces and Commando detachments. USS Harwood (DD-861)
USS ''Harwood'' (DD/DDE-861) was a of the United States Navy, in service from 1945 to 1971. She was transferred to Turkey on 17 December 1971 and sunk in error by Turkish aircraft on 21 July 1974. Namesake Bruce Lawrence Harwood was born 10 February 1910 at Claremont, California. He enlisted in the Navy on 6 June 1935. After training as an aviation cadet at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, he was commissioned Ensign on 7 July 1939 and began flying duty with a torpedo plane squadron. He received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism on 24 August 1942 during the Solomon Islands campaign. Leading his squadron in an unsupported aerial torpedo raid against an Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) task force, Lieutenant Harwood pressed home the attack through antiaircraft fire. The squadron scored one certain and two estimated hits on an enemy aircraft carrier. USS ''Norris'' (DD-859) was one of 98 s in the United States Navy during the end of World War II. ''Norris'' was active from 9 June 1945 to 4 December 1970. Although built too late to see action during the war, the ship served in the Pacific, Atlantic, Asiatic, and Mediterranean areas. Namesake Benjamin White Norris was born on 15 May 1907 at Callao, Peru. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserves on 15 May 1919. He completed flight training on 6 May 1938 and was promoted to Major on 16 May 1942. He was killed in action 4 June 1942 while leading a search and attack mission during the Battle of Midway.
