Field Hockey
Field hockey (or simply referred to as hockey in some countries where ice hockey is not popular) is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with 11 players in total, made up of 10 field players and a goalkeeper. Teams must move a hockey ball around a field by hitting it with a field hockey stick, hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal (sports), goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, although grass has become increasingly rare as a playing surface. Indoor hockey is usually played on a synthetic hard court or hardwood sports flooring, and beach version is played on sand. The stick has evolved significantly over the game's history in its composition and shape. Sutton Coldfield or the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield ( ), is a town and civil parish in the city of Birmingham, West Midlands County, West Midlands, England. The town lies around 8 miles northeast of Birmingham city centre, 9 miles south of Lichfield, 7 miles southwest of Tamworth, Staffordshire, Tamworth, and 7 miles east of Walsall. The 1988–89 English Hockey League season took place from October 1988 until April 1989. A new league format was introduced to English hockey whereby two divisions of sixteen teams would compete in the first and second divisions with promotion and relegation. This replaced the previous format of regional leagues. The Men's National League attracted a sponsor in Poundstretcher and they would commit £300,000 over three years. The 1999–2000 English Hockey League season took place from September 1999 until May 2000. The men's National League was won by Canterbury with the women's National League going to Hightown. Laura Unsworth
Laura Roper (née Laura Unsworth) (born 8 March 1988) is an English field hockey player who plays as a midfielder or defender for East Grinstead and the England and Great Britain national teams. She is the first British field hockey player to win three Olympic medals. Unsworth attended Coppice Primary School, Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls and Loughborough University. Club career Roper plays club hockey in the Women's England Hockey League Premier Division for East Grinstead. She has also played for Holcombe, Loughborough Students and Sutton Coldfield. International career Unsworth made her international debut in 2008 and was part of the Great Britain teams that won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics and bronze medals at the 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics.
