Summernats
Summernats (a portmanteau of "Summer" and "National"), is an annual car festival held in Canberra, Australia since 1987, except 2021. Summernats, which is usually held at the start of the year, is the best known specialist car enthusiast festival in Australia, and an event which attracts many tourists to Canberra, bringing in excess of $20 million in economic benefit to the ACT economy. It has increasingly been promoted as an event for families. The Summernats spectator attendance record was set in 2017, with 119,184 attendees. Summernats is held over a four-day period, with many events, with prizes in competitions such as for burnouts, parades of cars around the track, fireworks at night and two outdoor concerts held on Friday and Saturday nights. Chic Henry
Chic Henry, born Anthony Robert Henry (15 December 1946 – 14 April 2022), was a car enthusiast and the founder of the Summernats motor festival in Canberra. He was the Summernats director between 1988 and 2009. Life and career On 15 December 1946, Henry was born in Launceston, Tasmania to returned serviceman father Robert Henry and mother Alma Horton. Henry's great, great grandfather had been Tasmania's first Postmaster; his great grandfather had worked on the project to lay underwater phone cable between Tasmania and mainland Australia; and his grandfather and father had both served with the Postmaster-General's Department. Henry attended Queechy High School in Norwood, Tasmania, repeating his last year. At school he was a strong competitive swimmer and board diver. Accepting an apprenticeship with the Australian Army, Henry moved to Melbourne in 1964. His army career saw him living in Sydney and Townsville before his resignation in 1973. Street Machine is an Australian automotive magazine published by Are Media featuring customised cars from every era. Content Street Machine contains many sections, from letters sent in by readers, to articles on feature cars and technical issues. The feature cars are mostly Australian and American muscle cars from the 1960s to the 2000s, while occasionally a hot rod or rat rod will feature. Cars such as a Datsun 1600 or an Austin A30 also make rare appearances. History While Street Machine was originally titled "Van Wheels", its history can be traced back to the Australian Hot Rodding Review, or AHRR, of the 1960s and 1970s. By 1976, AHRR had collapsed, and a magazine called Van Wheels had replaced it. Van Wheels had an irregular publishing frequency and was destined to the same fate as AHRR, however Geoff Paradise, who at age 19 was Editor of AHRR before leaving to work at HOT ROD in the US took the failing brand under his wing.
