Burundi is a unitary state which is sub-divided at three levels: provinces, communes, and ''collines'' (hills). Divisions Provinces The largest administrative division in Burundi is the province. There used to be 18 provinces in Burundi, each named after their provincial capital. Each province has a Provincial Governor. The most recent province, Rumonge, was created in 2015. The provincial organisation of Burundi has been reformed on a number of occasions with the newest subdivisions dating in March 2023. With this new administrative subdivision has substantially reduced the number of provinces, communes and hills. The 18 provinces were combined and reduced into 5 provinces. Burundi
Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is located in the Great Rift Valley at the junction between the African Great Lakes region and Southeast Africa, with a population of over 14 million people. Kirundo Province
Kirundo Province is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi, in north of the country bordering Rwanda. The economy is mostly based on agriculture, with a dispersed population and few sizable communities. Before 1970 large parts of the province were forested. Migrants from the south then cleared much of the vegetation to create agricultural land, and Kirundo became the breadbasket of Burundi. The civil war from 1993 to 2005 caused agricultural output to drop by more than half. Since then, lack of farm inputs, poor infrastructure and shortages of water have caused widespread poverty. Rutana Province is one of the 18 provinces of Burundi. It contains the Kagera waterfalls, and the Nyakazu Fault. Location Rutana Province is in the southeast of Burundi and borders Tanzania to the east. Rumonge Province
Rumonge Province is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi, provinces of Burundi. It was created on 26 March 2015 by combining the communes of Burambi, Buyengero and Rumonge, previously part of Bururi Province, with the Bugarama and Muhuta communes previously belonging to Bujumbura Rural Province. Makamba Province
Makamba Province is the southernmost province of Burundi. The province has a population of 430,899 (2008 census) and covers an area of 1,960 km. The provincial capital is Makamba.
