Rumonge Province
Rumonge Province is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi, provinces of Burundi. It was created on 26 March 2015 by combining the communes of Burambi, Buyengero and Rumonge, previously part of Bururi Province, with the Bugarama and Muhuta communes previously belonging to Bujumbura Rural Province. Geography The capital is at Rumonge, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The Rumonge Nature Reserve, a semi-deciduous forest, and Kigwena Nature Reserve, a lowland tropical forest, are located in the province. Government The province's first governor, Juvénal Bigirimana, was sworn in on 17 April 2015. Burundi is divided into eighteen provinces, each named after their respective Capital (political), capital with the exception of Bujumbura Rural. History The Belgian colonial administration created provinces in Burundi on September 26, 1960, to replace chiefdoms as part of a series of administrative reforms. There were 18: Bubanza, Bukirasazi, Bururi, Cankuzo, Cibitoke, Karuzi, Kayanza, Kitega, Kirundo, Makamba, Muhinga, Muramvya, Mwaro, Mwisale, Ngozi, Ruyigi, Rutana, and Usumbura. Commune Of Muhuta
Muhuta is a commune of Rumonge Province in Burundi. In December 2023 heavy rains in the commune of Muhuta flooded hundreds of hectares of crop fields, causing landslides. A woman and her two children died when they were swept away by the Nyamusenyi stream. A week later their bodies were found in a pile of mud. Lightning injured people in the commune, social infrastructure was damaged and dozens of hectares of crop fields were damaged. Bugarama is a commune of Rumonge Province in Burundi. The seat lies at Bugarama. 2020 attack Between August 23 and 24, 2020, militants from RED-Tabara attacked the city of Bugarama, Burundi, resulting in the death of eleven civilians and five militants. Several RED-Tabara militants, including the commander of the Bugarama attack, were arrested in Rwanda on September 29. The Senate is the upper chamber of Parliament in Burundi. It consists of between 39 and 56 members who serve 5-year terms. The current Senate was elected on 20 July 2020 and consists of 39 members. Under the newly promulgated 2018 constitution and following the new administrative division, the senate similarly to the national assembly saw its number of seats reduced. The senate goes from 39 seats to 13 seats starting from the 2025 legislative elections. Election process In each of the country's 18 provinces, two Senators (one Hutu and one Tutsi) are chosen by electoral colleges of communal councilors. Voting takes place using a three round system.
