Strömsholm Palace
Strömsholm Palace, sometimes called Strömsholm Castle ( sv, Strömsholms slott), is a Swedish royal palace. The baroque palace is built on the site of a fortress from the 1550s, located on an island in the Kolbäcksån river at the west end of Lake Mälaren. The palace has interiors from the 18th century and an important collection of Swedish paintings. History King Gustav Vasa had a fortress built at Strömsholm in the 1550s. From 1560 until 1621, it served as the residence of queen dowager Catherine Stenbock, and after this, it was given to a later queen dowager, Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg who, however, preferred to reside at Gripsholm Castle. Finally, in 1654, it was given by King Charles X to Queen Hedvig Eleonora. Strömsholm Canal
The Strömsholm Canal ( sv, Strömsholms kanal) runs from Smedjebacken to Lake Mälaren A lake is an area filled with water, localized in a basin, surrounded by land, and distinct from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean, although, like the much larger ... near Strömsholm. It is long with 26 locks, and consists of a string of lakes connected by short manmade cuts. The canal took 18 years to build, between 1772 and 1795, to plans laid out by Johan Ullström. The main reason for it was the transport of iron produced by the many steelworks sited along the length of the waterway. The opening of the Stockholm Wästerås-Bergslagen railway marked the beginning of its decline and today the restored canal is only used by pleasure craft. Hallstahammar Municipality
Hallstahammar Municipality (''Hallstahammars kommun'') is a municipality in Västmanland County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Hallstahammar. In 1971 "old" Hallstahammar (with the status of a ''köping'' since 1943) was amalgamated with parts of the dissolved ''Kolbäck'' rural municipality to form the present municipality of unitary type. The municipal slogan is "''Bo hos oss''" ("Live with us"), which reflects the ambition of the present municipal leadership to boost population figures. Geography The municipality is subdivided into two parishes: Hallstahammar-Berg and Kolbäck-Säby.
