Stormont (provincial Electoral District)
Stormont was an electoral riding in Ontario, Canada. It was created in 1867 at the time of confederation and was abolished in 1973 before the 1975 election. The riding roughly corresponded to the territory of Stormont County. Boundaries From 1867 to 1886, the town of Cornwall was served by the separate electoral district of Cornwall; in 1886, the districts were merged, and the combined district was named Cornwall and Stormont only in the 1886 election. Its name reverted to Stormont for the 1890 election, and was not changed again until the riding's dissolution in 1975. Canadian Confederation () was the process by which three British North American provinces—the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick—were united into one federation, called the Name of Canada#Adoption of Dominion, Dominion of Canada, on July 1, 1867. Stormont County, Ontario
Stormont County area is a county in the Canadian province of Ontario. Stormont was created in 1792, but was settled seven years earlier in 1785. Veterans of Loyalist regiments were among the first settlers. An estimated one third of the pioneers in the county were Highlander, one third German and the rest English, Irish and Lowland Scots people. The original territory of Stormont also included Russell County, which became a separate county in 1800. Cornwall is a city in Eastern Ontario, Canada, situated where the provinces of Central Canada, Ontario and Quebec and the U.S. state of New York (state), New York converge. 1886 Ontario General Election
The 1886 Ontario general election was the sixth general election held in the province of Ontario, Canada. It was held on December 28, 1886, to elect the 90 Members of the 6th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). The election results were characterized a "crushing defeat for the Conservatives. The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Oliver Mowat, won a fifth consecutive term in government and an increased majority in the Legislature. The Ontario Conservative Party, led by William Ralph Meredith lost five of its seats. In Toronto, this and the next election (1890) were held under the Limited Vote system wherein Toronto voters had two votes for the three MPPs in their district. 1890 Ontario General Election
The 1890 Ontario general election was the seventh general election held in the province of Ontario, Canada. It was held on June 5, 1890, to elect the 91 members of the 7th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). The Assembly had been increased from 90 members after the passage of an Act in 1889 creating Nipissing as a riding. The election was a victory for the Ontario Liberal Party, led by Oliver Mowat. The party won a sixth consecutive term in government, despite losing a small number of seats in the Legislature. The Ontario Conservative Party, led by William Ralph Meredith won two additional seats. Stormont—Dundas And Glengarry
The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) is a county and census division in the Canadian province of Ontario, that comprises three historical counties. The county's administrative office is located within the City of Cornwall, which, together with the Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne, is geographically within the county but administered independently. The United Counties of SDG borders Quebec to the east and New York in the United States to the south.
