Stomoxys Calcitrans
''Stomoxys calcitrans'' is commonly called the stable fly, barn fly, biting house fly, dog fly, or power mower fly. Unlike most members of the family Muscidae, ''Stomoxys calcitrans'' ('sharp mouth' + 'kicking') and others of its genus Hematophagy, suck blood from mammals. Now found worldwide, the species is considered to be of Eurasian origin. Physical features The stable fly resembles the common housefly (''Musca domestica''), though smaller, and on closer examination has a slightly wider and spotted abdomen. Adults are generally about in length and a lighter color than the housefly. Unlike the housefly, where the mouth part is adapted for sponging, the stable fly mouth parts have biting structures. Habitat As its name suggests, the stable fly is abundant in and around where cattle are kept. Its maggots are often seen in the rotting manure near cattle and poultry. Biology The earliest and one of the most comprehensive accounts of stable fly biology was presented by F. Bish ... Brachycera Tribes
The Brachycera are a suborder of the order Diptera. It is a major suborder consisting of around 120 families. Their most distinguishing characteristic is reduced antenna segmentation. Description A summary of the main physical characteristics is: * Antenna size (with eight or fewer flagellomeres) is reduced. * The maxillary palp (an elongated appendage near the mouth) has two segments or fewer. * The back portions of the larval head capsule extend into the prothorax (the anterior part of the thorax, which bears the first pair of legs). * Two distinct parts make up of the larval mandible (lower jaw). * The epandrium and hypandrium of the genitalia are separated in males. * No premandible is present on the lower surface of the labrum (the roof of the mouth). * The configuration of the CuA2 and A1 wing veins is distinct. Brachyceran flies can also be distinguished through behavior. Many of the species are predators or scavengers. Classification The structure of subgroups w ... Ernest Edward Austen
Ernest Edward Austen DSO (1867 in London – 16 January 1938) was an English entomologist specialising in Diptera and Hymenoptera. His collection of Amazonian and Sierra Leonian insects is in the Natural History Museum, London, Natural History Museum, London. He wrote ''Illustrations of British Blood-Sucking Flies'' (1906) illustrated by Amedeo John Engel Terzi. Austen was a frequent correspondent of Ethel Katharine Pearce, dipterologist, daughter of Thomas and granddaughter of Charles Henry Blake Charles Henry Blake (1794–1872) was a British indigo planter and industrialist in India, who became a property developer and railway company director in London. Étienne Louis Geoffroy
Étienne Louis Geoffroy (October 12, 1725 – August 12, 1810) was a French entomologist and pharmacist. He was born in Paris and died in Soissons. He followed the binomial nomenclature of Carl von Linné and devoted himself mainly to beetle Beetles are insects that form the order Coleoptera (), in the superorder Endopterygota. Stomoxys
''Stomoxys'' is a genus of flies in the family Muscidae. The genus is unusual among the Muscidae in that it includes species that are bloodsucking ectoparasites of mammals. The best-known species is ''Stomoxys calcitrans'', most commonly known as the stable fly. The genus is small, comprising a dozen or two described species, and current evidence suggests that it is paraphyletic as well. Fritz Konrad Ernst Zumpt
Fritz Konrad Ernst Zumpt (11 May 1908 – 25 October 1985) was a German entomologist who worked mainly in Ethiopia, but also to a lesser extent in Uganda, Ghana and Mozambique. He is best known for his work on Diptera and the associations between insects and African mammals, as well as for his work on myiasis Myiasis is the parasitic infestation of the body of a live animal by fly larvae (maggots) which grow inside the host while feeding on its tissue. Although flies are most commonly attracted to open wounds and urine- or feces-soaked fur, some s ....
